Commodore PET 4000 Series Technical Manual
The Commodore 4000 Series Technical Manual, Model 4016/4032 is Commodore's own 76-page technical manual, part number P/N 990438. It is a package of engineering drawings — drawing trees, assembly drawings, parts lists, schematics and wiring diagrams — not a narrative manual, and it is the third of the numbered Commodore set alongside the C64 manual (990439) and the VIC-20 manual (990440).
The scan carries no text layer.
It covers more machines than its title says
[edit | edit source]The cover names the 4016 and 4032. The drawings inside cover the universal dynamic PET board, drawing 8032090, "PCB ASSY — UNIV. DYNAMIC PET", seven sheets, and its dash numbers are:

So the same board, in different build configurations, serves the 8032, the 4032 in both 9-inch and 12-inch cabinets, the 4016 and the SuperPET 9000. Anyone working on one of those machines should look here even though the title does not name it.
The revision block on that drawing runs from "Production Release" through revisions B to H, each tied to a Commodore ECO number (2157, 2172, 2237, 2308, 2414, 2565 and 2555, 2887, 3027).
What else is on the sheets
[edit | edit source]- Power supply assembly 8032051, three sheets, with a wiring diagram and Table I giving the transformer secondary tapping by cabinet: terminals 9 and 10 → 19 V for the 9-inch video, terminals 9 and 11 → 21 V for the 12-inch video. Fuse F1 is 1.6 A, and the drawing names the machines it is used on (8032, 8016).
- Assembly drawings and rework notes, including FCC-compliance jumper instructions and a part substitution index reference, P/N 321233.
What this manual settles
[edit | edit source]- The 9-inch and 12-inch PETs take different transformer taps. 19 V against 21 V, from the same supply assembly. Fitting the wrong tap is a real and easy mistake.
- The "4000 series" board is not a 4000-series-only board. It is the universal dynamic board, and the SuperPET 9000 is built on it.
- The revision history ties each board change to a Commodore ECO number, which is how a board's vintage can be placed.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No original PET 2001 "static" board coverage. That is a different design entirely — see Commodore PET 2001 Service Documentation.
- No troubleshooting guide, no circuit theory, no symptom tables.
- No text layer, so nothing here is searchable and every value must be read from the drawing.
- 60 Hz machines only, by the dash-number descriptions.
