The Macintosh Bible 4th edition 1992
The Macintosh Bible, fourth edition, is a book by Arthur Naiman, Nancy E. Dunn, Susan McCallister and John Kadyk "and a cast of thousands", published by Peachpit Press as a Goldstein & Blair book, copyright 1987-92, first printing September 1992. ISBN 1-56609-009-1, Library of Congress card number 92-16851.[1] The Library of Congress record gives the extent as 1,241 pages.[2]
Like the earlier editions it is a collection of tips, shortcuts and product evaluations, with entries initialled by their contributors. The hosted scan is 1,262 PDF pages, covers included.

Hardware content
[edit | edit source]Chapter 2 covers models of the Mac (p. 95), buying and upgrading, hardware tips, monitors, keyboards, mice and protecting the Mac; Chapter 3 covers hard disks, SCSI devices, floppy disks and memory upgrades; Chapter 8 covers troubleshooting, mostly of software and disks.[3] A few entries in the "Mac hardware tips" section are relevant to repair:
- "Preventing Mac Plus failures" (Rich Wolfson) says early Macintosh Plus power supplies were "notorious" for failing, and recommends checking the voltage between pins 1 and 2 of the mouse port and adjusting the potentiometer on the side of the machine to exactly 5 V, rechecking after five to ten minutes' warm-up. It says most Pluses came set between 4.8 and 5.1 V, and that a failed Plus supply is usually the flyback transformer and its related parts.[4]
- "Keeping the Portable's battery charged" (Naiman and Todd Corleto) says "if the Mac Portable's batteries fall below 5.4 volts, they can't be recharged", and advises not leaving a battery in the Portable for more than two weeks without the adaptor plugged in, and recharging a stored battery at least every six months.[5] Apple's procedure is different: measure the battery, recharge it if it reads below 5.7 V, and replace it if it will not recharge.[6]
