Macintosh Portable Service Source
Appearance
The Macintosh Portable volume of Apple's Service Source is Apple's 151-page module-level service manual for the Macintosh Portable, covering both the original (non-backlit) and backlit models. The PDF was created on 19 January 1996 for the Service Source CD. Chapters are numbered from page 1 each.

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Processor and memory: Motorola 68HC000 at 15.6672 MHz; 1 MB of static RAM (thirty-two 32K × 8 chips, 100 ns), expandable to 2 MB with a 1 MB card or 4 MB with a 3 MB card on the backlit model; 256K ROM; 128 bytes of PRAM; 32K of static video RAM (Specifications pp. 1-2). Wait states: 1 on the static logic board, 10 on the pseudostatic board.
- Display: 10-inch active-matrix LCD, 640 × 400 pixels (p. 8).
- Power: main battery sealed lead-acid, 6.5 V; backup battery a 9 V transistor battery; power adapter input 85-270 V AC, output 7.0-7.6 V (7.5 V nominal), up to 2.0 A (pp. 9-10).
- Battery verification (Additional Procedures pp. 1-3): measure the main battery on the 10 V DC range; below 5.7 V, recharge it, and if it will not recharge, replace it. Adapter verification (pp. 4-5): Apple's pass figure is 7.53-7.54 V at the plug.
- A service trap Apple repeats in several procedures: after removing the main battery, refit the battery cover, because leaving it off keeps power connected to the logic board, and removing or fitting modules with power present can damage both the old and new parts (Battery Verification p. 2, RAM Expansion p. 21).
- Removing the backup battery erases parameter RAM; note the Control Panel settings first (Backup Battery p. 10).
- The first cures for a blank, unresponsive machine: remove the shipping sheet between battery and contacts on a new machine, reset the power manager, connect the adapter and wait three or four minutes before restarting (Symptom Charts, Power p. 2).
- Exploded-view part numbers: logic board 661-0470 and 661-1610; non-backlit LCD 661-0473; backlit LCD 661-0647; 6 V main battery 076-0376; floppy drive 661-0474; hard drive 661-0540; keyboard 661-0476 and 661-1612; trackball 661-0475; speaker 600-0406.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No schematics, no component-level parts list and no component values.
- No Adjustments chapter; the Portable has no CRT.
- No charging-circuit or power manager internals; the battery and adapter checks are pass/fail measurements at the terminals.
