Macintosh Portable General Maintenance

The Macintosh Portable comes apart without screws: the rear cover and keyboard cover are held by latches, and the logic board sits on a plastic subframe held by clips. Apple warns that it contains CMOS devices very susceptible to static, so work on an earthed mat with a wriststrap throughout.[1] The same procedures apply to the backlit model.
Opening the machine
[edit | edit source]- Rear cover: press the two plastic cover latches, pivot the rear of the cover up and lift it off.[1]
- Main battery: press the two tabs at the front of the battery cover, slide it towards the rear and lift the battery out. Refit the battery cover before doing anything else: with it off, power stays connected to the logic board and modules can be damaged.[1]
- Keyboard cover: push the carrying handle towards the computer and open the display. Stand the computer on its rear panel and lever off the feet. Push a jeweller's screwdriver into the centre hole at each top corner of the bottom case to unsnap the cover's corners. Lay the computer flat and work your fingers between the bottom case and cover from the edges towards the centre; two latches in the middle hold it.[1]
Owners report that most Portable cases are cracked from use and shipping, but the plastic is not brittle and repairs well. David Cook used a clear five-minute epoxy on broken tabs and parts.[2]
Display
[edit | edit source]- The LCD is very susceptible to static. Handle it by its edges, do not touch the component side and do not remove the tape.[1]
- Later Portables and replacement displays have two Phillips screws holding the bezel; remove them if fitted. Release the bezel by pushing a jeweller's screwdriver into the latch opening on each side of the display housing until it clicks.[1]
- On the backlit display, disconnect the CCFL-to-inverter cable and the inverter-to-LCD cable before lifting the panel out.[1]
Batteries and power
[edit | edit source]The main lead-acid battery, the 9 V backup battery and the power adapter are covered on Macintosh Portable Battery Replacement. Keep the main battery charged; Low End Mac warns that it becomes unusable below 5.4 V.[3] Inspect the 9 V battery compartment on any machine that has been stored, because a leaking 9 V cell corrodes the traces near the memory chips.[4]
Board cleaning and capacitors
[edit | edit source]Both logic boards have leaking surface-mount electrolytics; the lists are on Macintosh Portable Capacitor Replacement Guide. Leakage residue causes faults even after a recap: one owner cured a Portable that restarted itself after every shut-down by scrubbing the dirty areas with a toothbrush and 99 % isopropyl alcohol.[2] See also Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
Trackball
[edit | edit source]Apple's trackball maintenance:[1]
- Turn the trackball retainer anticlockwise as far as it will go, and lift out the retainer and ball.
- Blow the dust out of the trackball assembly.
- Wipe the rollers with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol or tape-head cleaner, turning them to reach every surface. Do not use tissue or anything that leaves lint, and do not use cleaning liquid on the ball.
- Wipe the ball with a soft, dry cloth.
For a trackball that still sticks, David Cook followed JDW's method: clean the bearings, recap the trackball circuit board and replace the old yellow rollers. Watch the small springs, which are easy to lose.[2]
The trackball and the optional numeric keypad can sit on either side of the keyboard. To swap them, disconnect each device's flat cable, press back the plastic tabs to lift it out, move the keyboard spacer to the side opposite the keyboard, set each device into the front guides and press the back down until it snaps in.[1]
Memory
[edit | edit source]The RAM card plugs into the expansion slot behind the rear cover once the main battery is out. Static RAM cards fit the original board and pseudostatic cards the backlit board; Apple's check is whether the RAM connector has a notch (pseudostatic).[1] Original cards are scarce. Reproductions appear from time to time, and one card that seemed faulty only needed contact cleaner and its chips reseated.[2] The limits are 9 MB on the original and 8 MB on the backlit model.[5]
Hard disk
[edit | edit source]The internal 40 MB drive sits in the subframe on four metal tabs and two plastic latches. When refitting one, keep the drive cable clear of the metal bracket, which can cut it, and route the cable under the display assembly to connector J18.[1] The original Conner drive has a proprietary connector.[6] Restorers replace failed drives with SCSI SD-card emulators fitted through a Portable adapter.[2] See Hard Drive Maintenance and Repair.
Software
[edit | edit source]- Use System 6.0.5 or later; Apple's charts cite it for charging, printing, modem and sleep faults.[1]
- Use version 1.3 of the Portable control panel on the backlit model.[1]
- Do not use Apple HD SC Setup newer than version 7.3.1; later drivers crash the Portable when it wakes from sleep.[3]
