Macintosh Performa 6290CD
The Macintosh Performa 6290CD is a model in Apple's Performa 6200 series of desktop Macintoshes. Apple's specification sheet gives it a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e, 8 MB of RAM and a 1.2 GB IDE hard drive, with an introduction date of 27 January 1996.[1] EveryMac lists it as sold only in North America, at US$2,300 (order number M4727LL/A).[2]
Apple's service manual gives the Performa 6290 and 6300 a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e; the repair parts list gives that logic board as 661-1041.[3] The Macintosh Performa 6200CD page has the model table for the series, the full specification, Apple's repair extension procedure and a selection of Apple's symptom charts.

1.2 GB hard drive
[edit | edit source]Apple's symptom charts cover a flashing question mark at start-up with the 1.2 GB drive that clears on a restart. Check the drive's firmware with Apple's 1.2 GB Firmware Utility 1.1 (Tech Info Library article 22102), then look at the serial number on the white label under the bar code, after the line "1.2GB, LAPZA, 655-0397". If it does not end in "C", Apple replaced the drive under warranty.[3]
Battery and repair extension
[edit | edit source]The battery is a 4.5 V alkaline pack.[1] Apple's test is to measure it on the 10 V DC range with the logic board out and replace it below 3.0 V.[3] Neutralise alkaline leakage with a weak acid such as vinegar; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Apple names the Performa 6290 among the models in its repair extension programme for system freezes and sudden changes in video colour hue. The repair checks the clock chip at U10 (it should be part 343S1191 or 343S1121) and the cache/ROM DIMM, and replaces the logic board or the DIMM (661-1278) as needed; the full procedure is on the Performa 6200CD page.[3]
