The Macintosh Performa 630CD is the Performa 630 with an internal CD-ROM drive: a low-profile desktop Macintosh with a 33 MHz 68LC040, sold through consumer retail outlets from July 1994. Apple's specification sheet covers the 630 and 630CD together and dates them 1 July 1994; EveryMac gives 18 July 1994.[1][2] Macworld listed Apple's estimated street price in September 1994 as US$1,849 to US$1,899, with 8 MB of RAM, a 250 MB hard drive, a 14-inch monitor and keyboard.[3] The same machine was sold to schools as the Macintosh LC 630 and to business as the Macintosh Quadra 630 (with a full 68040).[3]

Configuration
[edit | edit source]Apple's service manual lists the Performa 630CD as shipped with 8 MB of RAM, a 1.4 MB SuperDrive, a 250 MB IDE hard drive, an internal AppleCD 300i Plus CD-ROM drive, a 14-inch Apple Performa Display Plus and a TelePort send-fax/data modem.[4] The 4 MB soldered to the logic board is topped up by a SIMM in the single SIMM socket.[1][4]

The Performa 630 Series volume prints the maximum power as "5 W"; Apple's specification sheet and the LC 630/Quadra 630/Performa 640 volume give 45 W.[4][1][5]
CD-ROM drive
[edit | edit source]The internal hard drive is IDE, but the CD-ROM drive is SCSI, set to SCSI ID 3 at the factory.[4] It comes out from the front: remove the drive bezel and the drive security bracket, push up the release latch and pull the drive out of the chassis. It plugs straight into the internal wiring harness, so it can take some force to free.[4] Apple's symptom charts give these cures for CD-ROM faults:[4]
- Drive does not accept a disc: replace the disc if it is dirty or damaged; reseat the drive; replace the drive.
- The Macintosh cannot mount the drive: reseat it; check that its SCSI ID is still 3; replace it.
- An external SCSI device works on its own but not with the internal drive: set the external device to a different SCSI ID from the CD-ROM drive, and check its termination.
Battery
[edit | edit source]Apple's specification sheet gives the battery as 4.5 V alkaline.[1] The Service Source names no battery part and no test voltage. Its symptom charts tell the technician to "Unplug 5.4 battery, wait 20 seconds, plug in battery, and restart computer"; "5.4" is a misprint for 4.5, which the LC 630 volume prints for the same step.[4][5] Leakage from an alkaline pack is neutralised with a weak acid such as vinegar; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Power supply
[edit | edit source]Apple's exploded views give the same power supply part number, 661-0170, for the Performa 630 series and for the later Performa 6200 and 6300 machines in the same case.[4][6]
