The Macintosh Performa 6300CD is a PowerPC desktop Macintosh with a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e, 16 MB of RAM, a 1.2 GB IDE hard drive and a quadruple-speed CD-ROM drive, in the low-profile case of the Macintosh Quadra 630. Apple's specification sheet dates it 16 October 1995; EveryMac gives 27 January 1996 and lists it at US$2,800 with a 15-inch Apple colour monitor, sold only in North America.[1][2] It is the first model of the Performa 6300 series, and Apple's Performa 6200/6300 Series Service Source covers it with the 6200 models.[3]

All run the PowerPC 603e on a 64-bit, 40 MHz bus.[1][4] Apple says the 6320CD supersedes the 6300CD and differs from it only in having a 120 MHz processor.[3] The Performa 6360 kept the case but has little else in common with the rest of the series; see its own page.[3] EveryMac lists a business version of the 6320CD, the Power Macintosh 6300/120, sold only in Asia.[5]

Apple's specification sheet gives a lower figure, 55 W maximum at 1.25 A, alongside the Service Source's 125 W supply rating.[1][3]
Hardware
[edit | edit source]The 6300-series logic board is Apple part 661-1041 (100 MHz) or 661-1175 (120 MHz, 6320CD).[3] Neither has memory soldered on; the 16 MB is in the SIMM slots.[1] On the 6300 board one SIMM slot sits next to the processor, and its heat sink has to come off before a SIMM can be fitted or removed in that slot.[3] The frame buffer is its own 1 MB of DRAM, so video takes none of the system memory.[3] The internal hard drive is IDE; Apple says to replace it like for like, and it plays no part in SCSI IDs or termination. The internal CD-ROM drive is SCSI ID 3 from the factory.[3] The LC processor-direct slot takes many 68030 PDS cards, but cards that work with the main processor, such as RAM caches or FPUs, do not work in it.[3]
The logic board slides out of the back once the plastic I/O door is removed; the drives come out from the front after the front panel.[3] Apple also sold the 603e/100 board and its fence as a finished upgrade kit, the Power Macintosh 5300/6300 Logic Board Upgrade; the Performa 630 Series Service Source lists the same kit as an upgrade for the 630 family.[3][6]
Battery
[edit | edit source]Apple's specification sheets give the battery as 4.5 V alkaline, and the symptom charts call it the "4.5 V battery".[1][3] It sits on a hook-and-loop pad on the logic board with a plug-in lead. Apple's test is to take out the I/O door, logic board and battery, measure on the 10 V DC range and replace the battery below 3.0 V.[3] Leakage from an alkaline pack is neutralised with a weak acid such as vinegar; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Repair extension programme
[edit | edit source]Apple's repair extension programme for system freezes and sudden changes in video colour hue covers the Performa 6300, but not the 6320 or 6360.[3] The repair checks the clock chip at U10 (it should be part 343S1191 or 343S1121) and the cache/ROM DIMM, and replaces the logic board or the DIMM (661-1278) as needed; the full procedure is on the Performa 6200CD page.[3] Open Transport 1.1 does not work on the 6300; it needs 1.1.1, and if that installer reports a hardware issue, the cache/ROM DIMM has to be replaced first.[3]
