Macintosh Performa 631CD
The Macintosh Performa 631CD is a model in Apple's Performa 630 series with a 33 MHz 68LC040, introduced on 17 July 1995, a year after the rest of the series. Apple's specification sheet gives it 4 MB of memory on the logic board and two SIMM slots, 8 MB as shipped, 52 MB maximum, a 500 MB IDE hard drive, a double-speed CD-ROM drive and System 7.5.1.[1] EveryMac describes it as externally identical to the Performa 630CD but with two RAM slots and a 15-inch Apple colour monitor, and lists it at US$1,600 (order number M4148LL/A).[2]
Apple's Macintosh Performa 630 Series Service Source names the 631CD on its title page but gives no configuration for it; its specifications, symptom charts and procedures cover the whole series.[3] The Macintosh Performa 630 page has the series configuration table, the full specification and a selection of the symptom charts.
Specifications
[edit | edit source]| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Motorola 68LC040 at 33 MHz, no FPU[1][3] |
| RAM | 4 MB on the logic board; two 72-pin SIMM slots, 80 ns; the second slot takes only 1, 4 or 16 MB SIMMs; 52 MB maximum[1] |
| Video | 1 MB DRAM frame buffer, not expandable; up to 16 bits per pixel at 640 × 480, 8 bits at 800 × 600 and 832 × 624[1][3] |
| Drives | 1.4 MB SuperDrive, manual insert; 500 MB IDE hard drive; double-speed CD-ROM drive. Internal SCSI hard drives are not supported[1][3] |
| Electrical | 100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz; 45 W maximum[1] |
Memory
[edit | edit source]Apple made two versions of the 630-series logic board: part 661-0158 with one SIMM slot (36 MB maximum) and part 661-1114 with two, one of them for single-sided SIMMs only (52 MB maximum).[3] The 631CD is a two-slot machine.[1] The second slot takes only 1, 4 or 16 MB SIMMs, so the 52 MB maximum is 4 MB on the board, a 32 MB SIMM in the first slot and a 16 MB SIMM in the second.[1][2] Apple specifies 80 ns SIMMs.[1]
Battery
[edit | edit source]Apple's specification sheet gives the battery as 4.5 V alkaline.[1] The Service Source gives no test voltage; its symptom charts print "Unplug 5.4 battery" for the 20-second battery-unplug step, a misprint for 4.5.[3] Neutralise alkaline leakage with a weak acid such as vinegar; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Maintenance and repair
[edit | edit source]The Performa 631CD has the LC 630's case and logic board family, and the LC 630 guides apply: Macintosh LC 630 General Maintenance, Macintosh LC 630 Troubleshooting and Macintosh LC 630 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
