Macintosh Performa 450
The Macintosh Performa 450 is a desktop Macintosh sold by Apple through consumer retail shops. It is the Macintosh LC III under a Performa name.[1] Against the Performa 430 it has a 25 MHz processor on a 32-bit bus, a single 72-pin SIMM socket for up to 36 MB, 1 MB of ROM, a coprocessor socket and a 114-pin expansion slot.[2] Low End Mac records that the 450 was replaced by the Performa 460 in October 1993.[1]
Apple gives the introduction date as April 12, 1993, with System 7.1P2 and System Enabler 308 as the original system software.[3] EveryMac gives a US price of US$1,800, discontinuation on November 1, 1993, order number M1698LL/A and model number M1254.[4]

The coprocessor socket is a PLCC socket for a 68882; no FPU is fitted as standard.[5] With the on-board 512 KB of VRAM the machine shows 256 colours at 640 × 480 and 832 × 624; with 768 KB it shows thousands. A 512K VRAM SIMM fits the socket, but only 256K of it is used.[3] The processor-direct slot has a power budget of 4 W.[5]
The PRAM battery is a 3.6 V lithium cell, Apple part 742-0011; Apple says to replace it below 3.0 V. The power supply is part 661-1733, shared with the whole LC family.[3][2]
Known faults
[edit | edit source]- Leaking surface-mount electrolytic capacitors on the logic board and in the power supply. The LC III board list is on Macintosh LC III Capacitor Replacement Guide.
- C22 on the LC III logic board, the 47 µF capacitor on the −5 V rail, is printed and fitted the wrong way round at the factory. Serial-port faults after a recap point there.[6]
- A flat PRAM battery: Apple's charts for this family put "Check batteries" first for "No video" and in the no-power entries.[2]

Service documentation
[edit | edit source]Apple covers the Performa 450 in the Macintosh Performa 400 Series Service Source, and the same board under its LC III name in the Macintosh LC Series/Quadra 605 Service Source. The Macintosh LC III Developer Note describes the hardware.[2][5]
