Macintosh Performa 400 Series Service Source
The Macintosh Performa 400 Series Service Source is Apple's 78-page module-level service manual for the Performa 400/405, 410, 430, 450, 460/466/467 and 475/476. The hosted copy is Apple's Acrobat edition from the Service Source CD, produced on 4 December 1995.[1] The machines are the consumer versions of the Macintosh LC II (400, 405, 410, 430), Macintosh LC III (450), Macintosh LC III+ (460, 466, 467) and Macintosh LC 475 (475, 476).[2] It is the only Apple service manual that covers the LC III+ under any name; the Macintosh LC Series/ Quadra 605 Service Source stops at the LC III and LC 475.

All share a 100–240 VAC automatically configured supply at 50–60 Hz, 8-bit mono sound (stereo output on the 475/476), a case 7.7 × 31.0 × 38.2 cm and a weight of 4.0 kg.[1]
Two printing errors on the Memory pages: the "ROM" heading on p. 5 sits against the DRAM lines for the 460/466/467 and 475/476, with the real ROM figures below them, and p. 6 gives the VRAM upgrade for the 450 and 460 series as "768 MB" where 768K is meant.[1] EveryMac gives the Performa 405 as shipping with 256K of VRAM, not the 512K Apple prints for the whole 400/405/410/430 group.[3]
What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Replace the lithium cell if it reads below 3.0 V on the 10 V DC range (p. 73). Apple's part is 742-0011 (p. 78).[1]
- An eight-tone error chord means SIMMs, then the logic board; a four-tone chord points at the hard drive or floppy drive (p. 18).[1]
- The Performa 400, 405, 410 and 430 accept 12 MB but recognise only 10 MB (p. 32).[1]
- A machine that shuts down intermittently may be in thermal protection: clear the vents and allow 30 to 40 minutes (p. 29).[1]
- Several no-video and no-power entries start with "Check batteries" (pp. 19–20, 31).[1]
- Fit the fan logo side down "or the fan may damage the computer" (p. 39).[1]

What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No schematics, component values, rail voltages or power-supply adjustment. It has no Adjustments chapter.
- No maximum-power figure for the Performa 460/466/467.
- No logic board part numbers.
The power supply, battery, take-apart steps and symptom charts match the Macintosh LC Series/ Quadra 605 Service Source, which covers the same boards under their LC names.[1]
