Macintosh LC Series/ Quadra 605 Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Macintosh LC Series/Quadra 605 Service Source is Apple's 112-page module-level service manual for the Macintosh LC, LC II, LC III, LC 475 and Quadra 605. The hosted copy is Apple's Acrobat edition from the Service Source CD, produced on 4 December 1995. It covers the LC III but not the 33 MHz LC III+, which Apple services in the Macintosh Performa 400 Series Service Source as the Performa 460/466/467.[1]

All five share a 100–240 VAC automatically configured supply (47–63 Hz for the LC series, 50–60 Hz for the Quadra 605), a case 7.7 × 31.0 × 38.2 cm and a weight of 4.0 kg.[1] The maximum-power figures are the machines' consumption, not supply ratings: the exploded view gives one power supply part, 661-1733, for the whole family.[1]

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Set the meter to the 10 V DC range and replace the lithium cell if it reads below 3.0 V (p. 107). Apple's part is 742-0011 (p. 112).[1]
  • The LC plays an error chord and the LC II, LC III, LC 475 and Quadra 605 an eight-tone chord for a memory fault; the cures are SIMMs first, then the logic board. A four-tone chord on the LC II points at the hard drive or floppy drive (pp. 20–21).[1]
  • A machine that shuts down or restarts intermittently may be in thermal protection; Apple says to clear the vents and allow 30 to 40 minutes (p. 32). An LC Ethernet card fitted without its standoffs also causes intermittent restarts (pp. 32, 66).[1]
  • The LC and LC II accept 12 MB but recognise only 10 MB (p. 36).[1]
  • On the LC II and LC III, fit the fan logo side down "or the fan may damage the computer" (p. 45).[1]
  • DRAM SIMMs from an LC do not work in an LC III (p. 77). The LC 475 and Quadra 605 share a replacement logic board; a Quadra 605 needs a jumper on J18, which service boards do not include (p. 60).[1]

The logic boards, DRAM SIMMs and hard drives are marked with an asterisk referring to a separate parts list, which is not part of this file.[1]

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics and no component values. It cannot source a capacitor list for any of these boards; the capacitor guides use Console5 and Recap-a-Mac instead.
  • No rail voltages, rail tolerances or power-supply adjustment. Every power fault in the symptom charts ends in "Replace power supply" or "Replace logic board".
  • No logic board or SIMM part numbers (see above).
  • Nothing on the LC III+ (Performa 460/466/467), although one symptom-chart entry covers a "Networked 33 MHz LC III" that freezes (p. 36).
