Macintosh Performa 430
The Macintosh Performa 430 is a desktop Macintosh sold by Apple through consumer retail shops. It is the Macintosh LC II under a Performa name; the Performa 400, 405, 410 and 430 are the same hardware.[1] In Apple's service manual the 430 differs from the Performa 405 only in its 120 MB hard drive and its bundled monitor, the Performa Display Plus.[2]
Apple gives the introduction date as April 12, 1993, with System 7.1P2 as the original system software.[3] EveryMac gives October 18, 1993 for the introduction and November 1, 1993 for the discontinuation, a US price of US$1,500, order number M1721LL/A and model number M1700.[4]

Sources: Apple's technical specifications and the Performa 400 Series Service Source, pp. 3–15.[3][2] The Service Source prints one maximum-power figure for the 400, 405, 410 and 430, under "Performa 400". Apple's technical specifications give the input range as 90–240 V; the Service Source gives 100–240 VAC. Both agree that the supply configures itself, so there is no voltage selector.
The machine accepts 12 MB (4 MB on board plus two 4 MB SIMMs) but addresses only 10 MB. With 4 MB SIMMs in both sockets, the lower 2 MB of the on-board RAM cannot be addressed.[3][2]
The Service Source lists a 512K VRAM SIMM for the 400, 405, 410 and 430 (p. 6); EveryMac says the 430 shipped with 256 KB.[2][4] Check the SIMM fitted before assuming the colour depth.
The PRAM battery is a 3.6 V lithium cell, Apple part 742-0011; Apple says to replace it below 3.0 V. The power supply is part 661-1733, shared with the whole LC family.[3][2]
Known faults
[edit | edit source]- Leaking surface-mount electrolytic capacitors on the logic board and in the power supply. The LC II board list is on Macintosh LC II Capacitor Replacement Guide.
- A flat PRAM battery: Apple's charts for this family put "Check batteries" first for "No video" and in the no-power entries.[2]
- The 10 MB ceiling above is normal behaviour, not a memory fault.

Service documentation
[edit | edit source]Apple covers the Performa 430 in the Macintosh Performa 400 Series Service Source, and the same board under its LC II name in the Macintosh LC Series/Quadra 605 Service Source.[2]
