The Macintosh Performa 5420CD is a graphite-coloured model of the Performa 5400 series. Apple's Service Source describes it in one sentence: "The Performa 5420 is a graphite-colored Power Macintosh 5400/120 initially sold in Japan only." Its plastic exterior parts are graphite and all its other hardware is that of the Power Macintosh 5400/120.[4] Apple's technical-specification page dates it to April 22, 1996 and notes that it was not sold in the United States.[1] EveryMac gives the Japanese order number as M4751J/A and says the machine was also sold elsewhere in Asia and in Europe.[2]
The Performa 5420/180 is a different machine: a graphite 180 MHz model sold in Japan and Australia, with a PowerPC 603ev, 16 MB of RAM on the logic board and a 1.6 GB or 2.4 GB hard drive, and otherwise the Power Macintosh 5400/180.[4][3]

Service notes
[edit | edit source]The graphite machines have their own exploded view in Apple's manual. For the Performa 5420 it lists the 120 MHz logic board 661-1072, power supply 661-1138, analogue/video board assembly 661-1182, CRT assembly 661-0952 (US) or 661-0954 (southern hemisphere), AppleCD 600i 661-1150, and graphite plastics: rear housing 922-2165, front bezel 922-2167, drive and control bezel 922-2170, I/O door 922-2169 and tilt/swivel base 922-2168.[5] The power supply and analogue board numbers differ from those of the platinum 5400 (661-0930, 661-0331, 661-1117 and 661-0928, 661-1356), so order by the graphite part numbers.[5][6]
The rest of the service information, including the known faults, is on Macintosh Performa 5400. The machine contains a CRT; read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening it. The clock battery is a 4.5 V alkaline pack that Apple replaces below 3.0 V, and alkaline leakage is neutralised with dilute white vinegar; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.[1][7]
