Power Macintosh/Performa 5000 Series Service Source
The Power Macintosh/Performa 5000 Series volume of Apple's Service Source is a 309-page service manual for the Power Macintosh 5400 and 5500 all-in-one computers. Its cover lists the Power Macintosh 5400/120, 5400/180, 5400/200 and 5500/225 and the international Performa 5400/160, 5400/180, 5420 and 5420/180; the Specifications chapter also gives figures for the 5500/250 and 5500/275.[1] Despite the cover title, it does not cover the 5200, 5300, 5260 or 5280, which have their own volumes; every chapter title page reads "Power Macintosh/Performa 5400 and 5500 Series".[2] The PDF was produced in FrameMaker and is dated 1 May 1997 in its metadata.
Like other Service Source volumes it is a module-level manual: specifications, symptom charts, take-apart procedures, CRT adjustments and exploded views with Apple part numbers. It has no schematics and no component values.

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- After replacing the CRT or deflection board, and with the set warmed up for 10 minutes, the high-voltage control is set so that a meter between the cathode of D713 (Rev. A analog board) or D703 (Rev. B) and chassis ground reads 29.5 V DC ± 0.1 V. The control is VR501 on Rev. A boards and VR702 on Rev. B; both are inside the analog board. The 5500 uses Rev. B parts.[12]
- VR701 is horizontal shift, used with the three-position centring switch SW701; VR601 is vertical shift. On the CRT/video board, VR301 is sub-contrast, VR302 and VR303 are red and green gain, and VR304 and VR305 are red and green bias.[13]
- Take Apart gives separate procedures for the original and Rev. B power supply, analog board and speakers, so identify the revision before ordering a part.
- The exploded views give Apple part numbers for housings, the CRT assembly, boards and small parts.
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]No schematics, no board-level parts lists and no component values. The exploded views give module and hardware part numbers only.
