LC 630/Quadra 630/ Performa 640 Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The LC 630/Quadra 630/Performa 640 volume of Apple's Service Source is a 141-page service manual. Its title page lists the Macintosh LC 630, Macintosh LC 630 DOS Compatible, Macintosh Performa 640 DOS Compatible and Macintosh Quadra 630.[1] The PDF's creation-date field reads 1956, which is wrong; its modification date is 28 January 1998.

Specifications

[edit | edit source]
630-series processors[2]
Machine Processor
Macintosh LC 630 Motorola 68LC040 at 33 MHz
Macintosh Quadra 630 Motorola 68040 (with FPU) at 33 MHz
Macintosh LC 630 DOS Compatible Motorola 68040 at 33 MHz, plus an 80486DX2 at 66 MHz on the DOS Compatible board

Apple's memory note reads: 4 MB built in, 8 MB optional, "expandable to 36 MB (if logic board has only one SIMM slot, part number 661-0158), or 52 MB (if logic board has two SIMM slots; one slot is a regular SIMM slot and the other is a single-sided SIMM slot, part number 661-1114)". The LC 630 DOS Compatible ships with 8 MB on the main board and a 4 MB SIMM on the DOS Compatible board, which takes up to 32 MB. Both boards need 72-pin SIMMs of 80 ns or faster. Video uses a 1 MB DRAM frame buffer that cannot be expanded; ROM is 1 MB.[2] The exploded view lists 661-0158 as the non-DOS logic board, 661-0189 as the Quadra 630 board and 661-1114 as the DOS Compatible board.[3]

Power is 100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz, 45 W maximum not including the monitor. The case is 10.95 cm H × 41.95 cm W × 32 cm D (4.3 × 16.5 × 12.6 in) and weighs 7.7 kg (17 lb) without a CD-ROM drive or 8.6 kg (19 lb) with one.[2]

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

Error chords: an eight-tone chord at startup points to the SIMMs (reseat, then replace), then the logic board. A four-tone chord points to the drives: disconnect the hard drive power cable and reboot, then the floppy drive cable, then replace the logic board.[4]

No power: the computer switches on only through the soft-power key on the keyboard, so Apple's chart tests with a known-good keyboard before reseating the logic board, resetting the battery, and replacing the power supply and then the logic board.[5] For a menu bar that flashes constantly, or a system that beeps constantly, Apple's first check is for a jammed front-panel control button.[6] A rattle at startup in a machine with the Apple External Video Connector is its cable touching the fan blades.[7]

The battery: Apple names no battery part or replacement threshold in this manual. Its symptom charts print the step "Unplug 4.5 battery, wait 20 seconds" in some places and "Unplug 5.4 battery" in others. Apple's technical specifications for the LC 630 and the Quadra 630 give the battery type as 4.5 V alkaline, so 4.5 is the voltage and 5.4 a misprint.[8] Leakage from an alkaline pack is neutralised with a weak acid such as vinegar.[5][9]

Upgrades: the Macintosh Processor Upgrade card lets a 68LC040 machine switch between a PowerPC 601 and its 68LC040. The Power Macintosh 5300/6300 logic board upgrade (603e at 100 MHz) is not supported on DOS Compatible systems.[10]

The exploded view gives service part numbers, including the power supply (661-0170), front panel control board (661-0139), CD-ROM drive (661-0913), floppy drive (661-0121) and processor upgrade card (661-0255).[3]

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There is no schematic, no component values or capacitor list, no supply-rail voltages or tolerances and no fuse rating. The logic board diagrams in Basics show ports, access covers and connectors, not circuitry.[1]
