Atari 1050 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

The Atari 1050 documentation below comprises Atari's field service manual for the Atari 1050 disk drive, Howard W. Sams & Co.'s Computerfacts service data for it, and Atari's owner's guide.

Atari 1050 Disk Drive Field Service Manual

[edit | edit source]

The 1050 Disk Drive Field Service Manual is Atari's service manual for the drive, part number FD100330. A separate scan of the Rev. 03 edition, dated October 1985, carries that part number on its cover.[1] The copy hosted here is a 77-page rebuilt scan without the cover, with the original schematic sheets and cleaner redrawn copies of them; its contents and page numbers match the Rev. 03 scan, which lacks many pages of sections 1 to 3.[2]

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • Capacitor values in the parts list. The list gives mechanical assemblies, semiconductors, inductors, the trimmers and the variable capacitor; capacitor values and ratings appear only on the four schematic sheets.
  • Parts for the World Storage Technology mechanism. The parts list and schematics are for the Tandon TM50-1 version.
  • A head azimuth adjustment. Atari replaces the mechanism if azimuth is out of specification.
  • Any lubrication procedure.

Sams Computerfacts CD13, Atari Model 1050 Disk Drive

[edit | edit source]

Computerfacts CD13 is Howard W. Sams & Co.'s technical service data for the 1050, dated February 1987, 22 pages including a fold-out schematic and an enclosed set of preliminary service checks.[3]

Contents

[edit | edit source]

From the index (printed page numbers): schematic, 2; main board photographs, 3, 4, 13 and 14; grid location guide for the main board, 5; test equipment and troubleshooting, 6; parts list, 7 to 9; logic chart, 10 and 11; line definitions and schematic notes, 11; chassis top view, 12; IC pinouts and terminal guides, 16 and 17; general operating instructions, 17. The enclosed preliminary service checks (pages i to viii) cover disassembly, a numbered list of service checks keyed to photographs, and general preventive maintenance.[3]

What this document does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • Voltage ratings for most electrolytic capacitors. The parts list rates only C2 (0.68 µF 35 V) and C41 (4.7 µF 16 V); the schematic gives values only.
  • Atari part numbers. Sams lists replacement parts by description and gives no Atari numbers.

Atari 1050 Disk Drive Owner's Guide

[edit | edit source]

The Atari 1050 Disk Drive Owner's Guide (Atari, 1982) is the 8-page guide packed with the drive. It covers connecting the drive and its adaptor, daisy-chaining up to four drives, the drive select switches, the DOS manuals supplied with the drive and the care of diskettes. It contains no specifications and no service information.
