Macintosh Server G4

The Macintosh Server G4 is the Power Mac G4 tower sold as a server, with server software installed and server configurations of memory and drives. EveryMac describes each model as "architecturally identical to a model in the Power Macintosh G4 series", lists versions built on the AGP Graphics, Gigabit Ethernet, Digital Audio, QuickSilver, QuickSilver 2002 and Mirrored Drive Doors towers from December 1999 to January 2003, and notes that the Xserve "quietly replaced" it.[1] Apple's Power Mac G4/Macintosh Server G4 Service Source covers the servers built on the 1999–2002 towers with the Power Macs.[2]

The 2001 server with AppleShare IP

edit

Apple's January 2001 data sheet describes the Digital Audio-generation server, order number M8182LL/A: a 533 MHz G4 with 1 MB of backside L2 cache on a 133 MHz bus, 256 MB of PC133 SDRAM (three slots, 1.5 GB maximum), a 60 GB 7200 rpm Ultra ATA/66 drive, an ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card in the AGP 4X slot, a CD-ROM drive, four PCI slots, two FireWire and two USB ports and 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet. It shipped with Mac OS 9.1, AppleShare IP 6.3.3 with a 500-client licence, Network Assistant, Macintosh Manager and Macintosh Management Server. Build-to-order options included Ultra160 SCSI drives, with SoftRAID when more than one was ordered. Apple rates it at 338 W maximum continuous and 30 lb (13.6 kg).[3]

The Mirrored Drive Doors server

edit

Apple's 2002 setup guide covers the Mirrored Drive Doors server with Mac OS X Server. It has ADC and DVI monitor ports, four DDR SDRAM slots, two optical drive bays, and front and rear drive carriers that each take two ATA drives or two SCSI drives: ATA/100 in the rear carrier and ATA/66 in the front. One of the PCI slots holds a low-voltage differential (LVD) SCSI card on configurations that have it.[4] Its repair procedures follow the Mirrored Drive Doors Power Mac in Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) Service Source.

Maintenance and repair

edit

The servers are repaired as the Power Mac G4 towers they are built on:

Apple's battery replacement sheet is written for both the Power Mac G4 and the Macintosh Server G4.[5] The battery is a 3.6 V lithium cell; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage if it has leaked.
