Power Macintosh/Performa 5000 Series Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Power Macintosh/Performa 5000 Series volume of Apple's Service Source is a 309-page service manual covering the Power Macintosh 5400/120, 5400/180, 5400/200 and 5500/225, and the international Performa 5400/160, 5400/180, 5420 and 5420/180. The PDF was distilled on 1 May 1997.

The cover title is wider than the contents. Despite being titled “5000 Series”, this volume covers only the 5400 and 5500; Apple's own Basics chapter is headed “Power Macintosh/Performa 5400 and 5500 Series”. The 5200/5300 and the 5260/5280 have their own volumes.

Service Source volumes are module-level documents. They give Apple's own specifications, symptom charts, take-apart procedures and module part numbers, but they do not carry schematics, board-level parts lists or component values, so they cannot be used to source a capacitor table. Where a figure below is quoted, it is quoted as Apple printed it.

Notable content

[edit | edit source]

The High Voltage adjustment is the interesting one: it is one of very few places where an Apple Service Source volume asks the technician to set an EHT level rather than simply replace a module. Note also that Take Apart prints two different procedures for the power supply, the analogue board and the speakers — “Original Version” and “Rev. B” — so identify the revision before ordering a part. Work on the high-voltage section only after following CRT Discharge Procedure.
