The Macintosh Quadra 630 is a desktop computer released by Apple Computer on July 18, 1994.[1] It was the first Quadra to use an IDE hard drive interface rather than SCSI, and the last Macintosh to carry the Quadra name.[2] The Quadra 630 shares its case design and logic board with the Macintosh LC 630 and Macintosh Performa 630 series.

Model Variants

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 630 shares its hardware platform with several other models:

All models use the same logic board and case. The Quadra 630 was positioned as the professional variant, though it used the same 68LC040 processor without FPU as the other 630 models.[3]

Architecture and Processor

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 630 is powered by a Motorola 68LC040 processor running at 33 MHz. The "LC" designation indicates the absence of a floating-point unit (FPU).[4] A full 68040 processor with FPU can be installed as a replacement.

The system uses a 32-bit data bus and 32-bit address bus with 8 KB of on-chip cache (4 KB instruction, 4 KB data).

Memory and Storage

[edit | edit source]

RAM Configuration

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 630 has 4 MB of RAM soldered directly to the logic board. A single 72-pin SIMM slot accepts modules up to 32 MB, for a maximum of 36 MB total RAM.[5]

Supported SIMM speeds: 80ns or faster. The system supports 4, 8, 16, or 32 MB SIMMs.

ROM and System Software

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 630 contains a 1 MB ROM. It shipped with System 7.1.2 and supports up to Mac OS 8.1.

Storage Systems

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 630 was the first Quadra to use IDE (ATA) for its internal hard drive, departing from the SCSI standard used in previous Quadras. The base configuration included a 250 MB IDE drive.

An internal expansion bay accommodates either a second hard drive, a CD-ROM drive, or an optional Apple TV/Video System card with analog video input.[6]

Display and Graphics

[edit | edit source]

Video output is provided by an integrated graphics controller supporting:

  • 512×384 at 16-bit color (thousands of colors)
  • 640×480 at 16-bit color
  • 832×624 at 8-bit color (256 colors)

Video memory: 1 MB DRAM (VRAM expandable via 256 KB VRAM SIMM to support higher resolutions and color depths).

The system includes a video-out port compatible with standard Apple monitors. An optional video-in card allowed capture of analog video and still images.

Audio Capabilities

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 630 features 16-bit stereo sound input and output through the Apple Sound Chip (ASC). Audio ports include:

  • 3.5mm stereo output jack
  • 3.5mm mono microphone input
  • Internal speaker

Input/Output and Expansion

[edit | edit source]

Port Configuration

[edit | edit source]
  • ADB ports × 2 (keyboard/mouse)
  • Serial ports × 2 (GeoPort compatible)
  • SCSI-1 port (external devices only; internal drives use IDE)
  • Video output (DB-15)
  • Audio in/out (3.5mm)
  • Ethernet (optional via Comm Slot)

Expansion Options

[edit | edit source]
  • Comm Slot — Accepts Ethernet or modem cards
  • LC PDS Slot — Processor Direct Slot for expansion cards
  • Video-In Card — Optional analog video capture
  • TV Tuner — Optional television tuner card

PCB Schematics & Service Manual

[edit | edit source]

The Macintosh Quadra 630 shares its logic board with the LC 630 and Performa 630 series. Service documentation applies to all 630-series models.
