Creative 3DO Blaster General Maintenance

The Creative 3DO Blaster has no moving parts of its own. What needs looking after is the backup cell for the save memory, the electrolytic capacitors, the cables and connectors that tie the card to the PC, and the Creative CR-563 drive it reads discs from.[1][2] Creative published a user's guide but no service information for the card.[1]
Handling the card
[edit | edit source]Creative's instructions for removing the card: touch the PC's metal case to discharge static, switch off the PC and every peripheral, unplug the mains lead, and only then open the case and lift the card out.[1] Hold it by the bracket and the edges, and keep the cables supplied with it.[1]
| Cable | Connects |
|---|---|
| VGA loopback | VGA card output (15-pin D-sub) to the card's VGA In |
| VGA feature connector | 26-pin feature connector on the card to the VGA card's feature connector |
| CD audio | The card's CD Audio-Out to the sound card |
[1] The CD-ROM data cable and the drive's own CD audio lead come with the drive and are moved to the card when it is fitted.[1]
Backup cell
[edit | edit source]The card keeps game saves in 32 KB of SRAM backed by a battery.[1] On the CT6110 photographed by archive3do the cell is a coin cell with solder tabs, in a yellow sleeve at the lower left corner of the card.[2] Creative does not give the cell type, so read it off the cell before ordering a replacement. Changing the cell loses the saves unless 3 V is kept on the SRAM while it is changed, and Creative never released software to copy saves off the card.[3][4]
Inspect the area round the cell for corrosion each time the card is out; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Capacitors
[edit | edit source]The card carries about a dozen small radial electrolytic capacitors, most of them in the audio and video circuits at the bracket end and a few elsewhere on the board.[2] Neither Creative's guide nor the Console5 TechWiki lists them, so photograph the board and note each value, voltage and polarity before replacing any.[1][5] For the signs of a failing capacitor see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
Connectors
[edit | edit source]- Clean the ISA edge connector and check it for damage before refitting the card.
- Check the CD-ROM data header and the 26-pin feature connector header along the top edge for bent pins. Both cables have a coloured wire that goes to pin 1.[1]
- Record the jumper settings before working on the card. Only JP5, the base address, is meant to be changed; the other jumpers are for factory use.[1]
The CD-ROM drive
[edit | edit source]The card works only with a drive using the Panasonic (MKE) interface, in practice the Creative CR-563.[6][2] The CR-563-B uses the Sanyo SF-92.5 laser, as do the Panasonic FZ-1 and FZ-10 3DO consoles. Most new SF-92.5 stock has the wrong ribbon arrangement, so a complete working drive is often the better spare.[7] Clean the lens with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud, and keep the drive's ID jumper at 0.[8][1]
