IBM PC 5150 Technical Reference (August 1981)

From RetroTechCollection

The Technical Reference for the IBM Personal Computer (5150), part of IBM's Personal Computer Hardware Reference Library, is the First Edition of August 1981, IBM part number 6025008. The hosted PDF has 396 pages. It describes the machine as launched: the 16KB-64KB system board, the 63.5 W power supply, the keyboard and the first options, with the BIOS listing and logic diagrams of the system board and of each option in Appendix D.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • It is not a service manual. It has no FRU part numbers, removal procedures or problem isolation charts; those are in IBM PC 5150 Hardware Maintenance and Service (August 1981).
  • The logic diagrams have no parts list and no placement drawing, so a designator has to be found on the board by hand. There is no circuit diagram of the power supply.
  • It covers only the 16KB-64KB system board and lists only the 120 V supply (p. 2-34). The 64KB-256KB board and the 220/240 V supply are in the revised edition of April 1984, described at IBM PC 5150 Technical Reference.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The filter capacitors on the 16KB-64KB system board (p. D-11, "System Board (I/O Channel)"): five on +12 V and one on −12 V, designated C6; five on −5 V and six on +5 V, designated C7. A note on the sheet gives all its capacitors as 8.2 µF tantalum.
  • The power supply: 63.5 W continuous, a switching regulator (pp. 1-1, 2-33); outputs +5 V at 2.3 to 7.0 A, −5 V at 0 to 0.3 A, +12 V at 0 to 2.0 A and −12 V at 0 to 0.25 A, with the regulation tolerances (p. 2-34); a 2 A input fuse, and Power Good with a turn-on delay of 100 ms, no greater than 500 ms, and its sense levels (p. 2-36).
