IBM PC XT 5155 5160 Technical Reference (March 1986)

The IBM Personal Computer XT and Portable Personal Computer Technical Reference, IBM part number 6280089, March 1986, is the 422-page later edition of the XT technical reference. It covers both the XT 5160 and the Portable Personal Computer 5155, which shares the XT's planar architecture in a luggable case.

What it contains

The system unit, the 8088 and its support devices, the memory subsystem for both the 64–256 KB and the 256–640 KB planars, the I/O channel with its signal descriptions and timings, the keyboard, the diskette and fixed disk interfaces, the power supply, BIOS usage and listings, the instruction set, character and keystroke tables, and the 5161 Expansion Unit interface.

The two-planar coverage is the reason to reach for this edition rather than the first: an XT with a 256–640 KB board is documented here and not in the earlier book.

What it does not contain

Not a service manual: no FRU part numbers, no removals, no symptom-to-FRU index, no fault trees. The logic diagrams it carries are design drawings without a bill of materials.

What it settles

It settles which XT planar you have and what its switch and memory rules are — the 64–256 KB and 256–640 KB boards behave differently and are documented separately here. It is also the reference for the 5155 Portable, which has no technical reference of its own.
