What it settles

[edit | edit source]

For a no-raster fault Apple uses six LEDs that are normally lit: V125 (horizontal and vertical sweep) and V810 (high voltage) on the main board, and V683, V684, V685 and V699 on the power supply board. The flowchart replaces the main board if V125 is out and the flyback transformer assembly if V810 is out. If the supply-board LEDs are off or flashing, the fuse on the on/off switch assembly is checked, then ribbon cables are unplugged in turn (X105 on the main board, X303 on the video board, X855 on the magnetometer degauss board) to find the module that pulls the supply down.[3]

Rev A CRTs need Rev A main boards and Rev B CRTs need Rev B main boards. A Rev B CRT has a small blue label reading "NEW" near the anode; a Rev B main board has capacitor C153, on either side of the board, and a Rev B board is converted to Rev A by removing C153.[4]

The degaussing circuitry and magnetometer make alignment sensitive to direction: before adjusting, Apple has the monitor placed facing magnetic north or south, at least three feet from metal objects, using a compass on the bezel. As on the 16-inch display, Apple says to rule out environmental distortion before swapping modules or adjusting.[5]

The miscellaneous symptom chart records that a Power Macintosh 9600 with an Apple/IMS video card can show jitter or a wavy image at 1152 × 870 on any display; cards with serial numbers below Fx705xxx should be replaced with part 661-1409. On domestic units a suspected CRT failure is to be confirmed with Apple Technical Support; only international units have a CRT take-apart procedure.[6]

The exploded view gives Apple part numbers, among them CRT assembly 076-0394, main board assembly 661-0656, power supply board 661-0658, video assembly 661-0655, flyback transformer assembly 661-1132, magnetometer degauss board 661-0657, position sensor board 982-0096, magnetometer coils 076-0403, degauss coils 076-0405, video filter board 076-0404 and on/off switch filter assembly 076-0398.[7]

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There is no schematic, no component values, no fuse rating, no supply-rail tolerance and no high-voltage figure; the flyback and the power supply board are replaced as modules.[1]
