Studio Display (21" CRT, 19.8" viewable image size) Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Studio Display (21" CRT, 19.8" VIS) with ColorSync technology volume of Apple's Service Source is the service manual for the 21-inch Apple Studio Display, which uses a Sony Trinitron CRT. The PDF has 203 pages and a text layer.

It covers order numbers M6204LL/A (the original blue and white version) and M6204LL/B. The data sheets give a variable 0.25–0.27 mm aperture-grille pitch, scanning of 31–107 kHz horizontal and 48–120 Hz vertical, a four-port USB hub, an ambient light tool in the box for ColorSync calibration, and a supply of 90–264 V AC, 180 W maximum, with less than 30 W in standby. The Basics chapter lists the USB Display Service Utility 2.1.1 (December 1999) and Apple Displays Software 1.8 (August 1999) used in service.

Measured values, as printed

[edit | edit source]
Check Where to measure Expected reading If out of range
High voltage Under the anode cap, with Apple high-voltage probe 076-0392 and its ground wire on the chassis 27 V DC ± 0.5 V on the meter (27 kV at the anode) 0 V: replace the main deflection board. Otherwise adjust with the high-voltage slider in the USB Display Service Utility
Power board Cathode (striped end) of diode DP9, near the top edge of the power board, against chassis ground 6.7 V ± 0.05 V Adjust potentiometer PP1, near the top centre of the power board, with a long plastic hex tool; replace the power board if it cannot be brought into range

The power-board reading is only valid after this set-up: 1152 × 870 at 75 Hz, the crosshatch pattern on a black background in the USB DSU, horizontal width set to 385 mm and vertical height to 288 mm and checked with a tape measure, and the screen control (the lowest control on the flyback transformer on the main deflection board) turned fully counter-clockwise.

Other service information

[edit | edit source]
  • Fuse: the no-video chart (power light off) names fuse FP1 on the power board, 4 A 250 V, Apple part number 922-0502. If a new fuse blows, replace the power board; if it blows again, refit the original power board with a new fuse and replace the main deflection board, which is the likely cause.
  • CRT/video board versions: a second version of the CRT/video board was introduced in November 1999 and is not backward compatible with the first. A display with serial number WR9451T8HOE or later has the version 2 board, and boards must be replaced like for like (Troubleshooting, p. 48).
  • Setup parameters: replacing the CRT/video board involves downloading the display's setup parameters, and a procedure covers connecting a second monitor to do it when the display has no picture.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There is no schematic, component-level parts list or capacitor list. Apart from the fuse FP1, the diode DP9 and the potentiometer PP1, no power-board components are identified.
