Studio Display (17" CRT, 16" viewable image size) Service Source
The Studio Display (17" CRT, 16" VIS) volume of Apple's Service Source is the service manual for the Apple Studio Display with a 17-inch Mitsubishi Diamondtron CRT. The PDF has 128 pages and a text layer.
It covers two versions under order number M6221LL. M6221LL/A, the original blue and white display, was sold as the companion to the Power Macintosh G3, met TCO 95 and came with a VGA-to-Macintosh adapter. M6221LL/B, grey and white, was sold for the Power Mac G4 and meets TCO 99. Their rear housing, intermediate bezel and front bezel have different part numbers (922-3649, 922-3647 and 922-3651 for /A; 922-3937, 922-3936 and 922-3938 for /B).
The CRT has a 0.25 mm aperture-grille pitch and 16.0-inch viewable image. The data sheets give scanning of 30–85 kHz horizontal and 48–160 Hz vertical, resolutions from 640 × 480 to 1600 × 1200, and a supply of 90–264 V AC, 47–63 Hz, 150 W maximum, with less than 15 W in standby.

Measured voltages, as printed
[edit | edit source]These measurements are taken with the display running and its covers off. Read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening the display. Apple's procedures say to connect and remove the probes only with the power off and to check that the ground lead is secure first. |
| Check | Where to measure | Expected reading |
|---|---|---|
| High voltage | Under the anode cap, from the rear of the CRT away from the frame, with Apple high-voltage probe 076-0392 and its ground wire on the chassis | 27 V DC ± 0.2 V on the meter, which Apple notes is 27 kV |
| B+ | Pin 180V at P305, solder side of the CRT/video board | 180 V ± 2.0 V |
| Heater | Pin H on the solder side of the CRT socket on the CRT/video board | 6.3 V ± 0.63 V |
| RGB cathodes | Pins RD, GN and BL on the solder side of the CRT socket | 65–85 V each, and the three nearly equal |
The B+, heater and RGB readings are taken against chassis ground. Apple's flowchart checks the four in that order. If all are in range it replaces the CRT and checks again; if the high-voltage, heater or RGB readings are out of range it replaces the main deflection and CRT/video board module. Diagonal trace lines on the screen call for the screen voltage adjustment.
The screen voltage is set with the Screen control, the lowest control on the flyback transformer. Warm the display for five minutes, set 1024 × 768 at 75 Hz, select the grey-bars pattern in the Display Service Utility, set brightness to its detent and contrast to maximum, dim the room lights, and turn the control with a plastic screwdriver until only the leftmost bar is completely black. Apple says to watch the screen in a mirror and not to reach around the monitor. Geometry adjustment uses adjustment adapter 077-0168.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]There is no schematic, component-level parts list or capacitor list. The main deflection board and the CRT/video board are exchanged as one module.
