Service Support Training Programs LaserWriter Technical Procedures Jan 1985

From RetroTechCollection

This document is a 236-page scan of an Apple Service Support Training Programs binder from 1985.[1] The title names only its first document, the Apple LaserWriter Printer Technical Procedures. The binder also holds Apple's Macintosh Office (AppleTalk) troubleshooting procedures (twice), parts of the DuoDisk and UniDisk technical procedures, pages from the August 1985 Technical Procedures Manual for the Apple Dot Matrix Printer, and four pages and two appendix extracts from a 1983 Lisa troubleshooting guide.

The LaserWriter procedures are marked on their contents page as "a preliminary version of the LaserWriter Printer Technical Procedures, for internal use only", with comments to go to Technical Information Materials Development at Apple, Mailstop 27-V. They are copyright 1985, the sections carry revision dates of January and February 1985, and items marked with an asterisk are also covered on the videotapes that accompanied the course.[2]

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

LaserWriter

[edit | edit source]

The LaserWriter prints at 300 dots per inch (6.8 million dots per page). Its I/O board has 1.5 MB of RAM, 500 KB of ROM and a 68000, receives PostScript from the host and passes a bit image to the DC controller board, which runs the print engine and laser/scanner unit.[3] Apple describes the I/O board as the most expensive single module in the printer and asks for electrostatic discharge precautions when handling it.[4] Section 2 gives the take-apart for the covers, I/O board, DC controller PCB, DC power supply/motor drive PCB, laser/scanner assembly, high-voltage power supply and fuser assembly (699-0306) with its heater bulb, thermistor and thermoprotector.[5]

The two adjustments are the laser power adjustment (P/N 011-7052), made after replacing the DC controller, with a jumper between pins 5 and 6 of J209 and the jumper between J209 pins 7 and 6 removed before adjusting; and the image skew adjustment (P/N 011-7051), which involves loosening the four large mounting screws and two sealed screws on the scanner unit.[6]

DuoDisk chip swapping chart

[edit | edit source]

The DuoDisk analog card chart lists, for each symptom, the chips to replace one at a time in the order given.[7]

DuoDisk analog card chip swapping chart
Symptom Location and part, in Apple's order
1. Motor runs but LED is off; will not boot A1 3469, B4 74LS32, B5 74LS07
2. Motor and LED on; will not boot B1 CA3141, B3 74LS125, A1 MC3469, C1 MC3470, B2 74LS33, B5 7407, C3 74LS74, C4 74LS02, C6 ULN2068, C7 ULN2068
3. Drive reads but does not write A1 MC3469, B1 CA3141, B2 74LS33, B3 74LS125, C5 74C86, B5 7407
4. Drive writes when diskettes are write-protected A1 MC3469
5. Data on disk damaged when using Open Apple-Control-Reset to reboot, or with some copy-protected software; unit passes the Drive Acceptance Program Capacitors C29 (at A1) and C30 (at B1): remove both, do not replace

Symptoms 1 to 4 apply only to analog cards with engineering number 676-[]101; symptom 5 applies to 676-[]101 or 676-[]102. Before replacing chips, Apple says to inspect the card for melted or broken components, particularly the 74LS125 and C21: "If you notice fuzz on the card, return the card to Apple. This usually means that the card was connected to a computer with the power on, and capacitor C21 has exploded."[7]

The DuoDisk parts list gives screw 400-1604, drive 2 top shield 805-5002, bottom cover subassembly 676-5101, DuoDisk shield 805-5000, drive 1 top shield 805-5001, top cover assembly 676-5103, screw 415-1410, DuoDisk cable 590-0114 and drive number label 825-0548.[8]

UniDisk (5.25-inch)

[edit | edit source]

The UniDisk parts list covers the 5.25-inch UniDisk, which shares its disk mechanism, sub-bezel and drive label with the DuoDisk: analog card 661-0287, sub-bezel 970-1258, bottom shield 805-0890, LED cable assembly 590-0140, Uni/DuoDisk disk mechanism assembly 661-72128, drive-to-CPU cable 590-0327, top case 675-5103, top shield 805-0891 and label 825-0548.[9] It is not the UniDisk 3.5.

Apple Dot Matrix Printer

[edit | edit source]

Parts on the Dot Matrix Printer pages include platen knob 970-0008, print head assembly 699-0092, front panel PCB with harness 970-0007, carriage drive wire 970-0080, carriage drive motor 699-0093, paper release lever 970-0009, AC line switch (115 V) 970-0011, transformer/switch assembly 699-0095 and DMP CPU card 661-75091. The fuses are 2 A 3AG (740-0101), 5 A (740-0022) and 3 A (740-0021).[10]

AppleTalk network

[edit | edit source]

The Macintosh Office appendix describes the AppleTalk Personal Network for troubleshooting: cable sold in two- and ten-metre lengths or as a kit with a 100-metre spool, how noisy nodes disrupt the bus, bus termination, impedance, dangling cables and circular networks. Apple notes that the AppleTalk bus conforms to the EIA electrical interface specification.[11]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics for any of the devices. The DuoDisk chart gives chip types and grid positions, not the circuit.
  • The DuoDisk D-speed adjustment and take-apart sections, and every UniDisk section except the parts list, are missing from the scan.
  • The Lisa material is four pages and two appendix extracts of a 51-page guide.
  • The LaserWriter procedures are a preliminary internal edition; Apple's later Service Source LaserWriter manuals replaced them.
  • The scan is of a photocopied binder; some pages are skewed and some figure captions are illegible.

Pages that cite this document

[edit | edit source]

The LaserWriter contains a laser, a high-voltage power supply and a fuser hot enough to burn. Apple's safety precautions are in section 2.A.3.
