The Power Mac Book 1995
The Power Mac Book! is a 1995 book by Ron Pronk, published by The Coriolis Group, Scottsdale, Arizona, and distributed to the book trade by IDG Books Worldwide. ISBN 1-883577-09-8; the scan is of the second printing.[1] The Library of Congress record gives the extent as xix, 395 pages (call number QA76.8.M3P77 1995).[2] The publisher presents it as the successor to Pronk and Jeff Duntemann's Inside the PowerPC Revolution.[3]
It is a buyer's and user's guide to the first PowerPC Macintoshes: the history of the PowerPC alliance, the 1994 Power Macintosh 6100, 7100 and 8100 and their upgrade options, 68K emulation, the AV models and video capture, the internet, running Windows, and System 7.5. It came with a CD-ROM of native Power Mac software, which is not part of the scan.[4]

[edit | edit source]Chapter 5 walks through the first-generation Power Macintosh logic board by function: the 4 MB ROM, DRAM, level 2 cache, the processor-direct slot and the 7100 and 8100 VRAM cards, NuBus on the 7100 and 8100, and the custom chips (HMC memory controller, AMIC I/O controller, SWIM III, Curio, Cuda, AWAC sound and Ariel II video), with "Why it won't work" notes on problems such as SCSI termination and the GeoPort Telecom Adapter.[5] Chapter 2 covers configurations and Apple's upgrade card, logic board upgrades and DayStar PowerCards.[4] The book has no schematics, parts lists or service procedures. Apple's service manuals for these machines are Power Macintosh 6100/ WS 6150 Service Source and Power Macintosh 7100 Series Service Source.
