The '''IBM PS/2 Model 30 286 Hardware Maintenance Reference''' is IBM's 55-page service reference pamphlet for the PS/2 Model 30 286 (8530-E series). '''Part number 64F3988, form number S64F-3988-00, First Edition (March 1990)'''.
The '''IBM PS/2 Model 30 286 Hardware Maintenance Reference''' is IBM's service reference pamphlet for the PS/2 Model 30 286 (8530-E models), part number 64F3988, form number S64F-3988-00, First Edition, dated 21 March 1990. The hosted copy is a 55-page PDF produced in 2009 from IBM's BookManager edition, so it is numbered by section (1.0 to 8.0) rather than by page.

It is one pamphlet of IBM's PS/2 maintenance library. For safety information the edition notice refers to the ''Hardware Maintenance Reference General Information'' pamphlet, and section 2.1 refers to the model's ''Hardware Maintenance Service'' pamphlet for the parts list and supported adapters. Neither is hosted here.

The Hardware Maintenance Reference pamphlets all follow the same structure:
== Contents ==
From the table of contents:
* 1.0 Product description: security (cover lock, power-on password) and system-board features (10 MHz 80286, 80287 connector, CMOS RAM, 512 KB RAM expandable to 4 MB, VGA, three expansion slots, serial and parallel ports, keyboard and pointing-device connectors).
* 2.0 Option compatibility: incompatible adapters (the 3278/3279 Emulation Adapter and the Speech Adapter cannot be installed together), drive and diskette compatibility, fixed disk drives, terminators.
* 3.0 Operating requirements: power supply (3.1), power-on self-test, system-board memory and memory-expansion adapters.
* 4.0 Specifications: size, weight (7.4 kg), environment, heat output and electrical input.
* 5.0 Special tools: the Tri-Connector wrap plug, IBM part 72X8546.
* 6.0 Removals and replacements: 1000 Cover, 1010 Rear Cover, 1015 Drives, 1020 Adapters, 1025 Bus Adapter, 1030 Cover Lock Assembly, 1035 Power Supply, 1040 Memory-Module Pack, 1045 Math Coprocessor, 1050 System Board, 1055 Front Bezel, 1060 Power Switch and Link, 1065 Drive Cradle, 1070 Clock Module, 1075 Diskette-Drive Cable, 1080 Fixed-Disk-Drive Cable, 1085 System-Board Video Cable.
* 7.0 Locations: front, rear and interior views, system board, and the diskette and fixed disk drive cables.
* 8.0 Safety grounds.

* '''1.0 Product Description''' — security and the cover lock, the power-on password, and the system-board features (microprocessor, CMOS RAM, ROM BIOS, video, serial and parallel ports, diskette controller, keyboard and pointing-device connectors).
== What this manual does not contain ==
* '''2.0 Option Compatibility''' — drive and diskette compatibility, fixed disk drives and terminators, and any adapters that are incompatible with this model.
There is no parts list or FRU part number list (those are in the Hardware Maintenance Service pamphlet), no symptom-to-FRU index, no schematic and no component values.
* '''3.0 Operating Requirements''' — the power supply and its minimum under-voltage sense levels, the power-on self-test, and the memory subsystem with its configuration rules and error handling.
* '''4.0 Specifications''' — size, weight, electrical input and heat output.
* '''5.0 Special Tools''' — the model's own service tools.
* '''6.0 Removals and Replacements''' — the numbered 10xx procedures, in the order IBM intends them to be done.
* '''7.0 Locations''' — front, rear, interior and system-board views with connector and jumper callouts.

Model-specific removals: 1000 Cover, 1010 Rear Cover, 1015 Diskette and Fixed Disk Drives, 1020 Adapters, 1025 Bus Adapter, 1030 Cover Lock Assembly, 1035 Power Supply, 1040 Memory-Module Pack, 1045 Math Coprocessor, 1050 System Board, 1055 Front Bezel, 1060 Power Switch and Link, 1065 Drive Cradle, 1070 '''Clock Module''' and 1075 Diskette-Drive Cable. Section 2.1 lists '''adapters that are incompatible with this planar''' — worth reading before buying an ISA card for an 8530-E.

== What it does not contain ==

'''Module level only.''' IBM serviced these machines by field-replaceable-unit exchange, and this pamphlet reflects that: it names FRU part numbers, not component values. There is no capacitor list, no resistor list, no semiconductor list and no schematic anywhere in it. The power supply, the planar and each drive are single line items in the parts catalogue. This is why no IBM machine checked in this wiki's verification drive has a published component-level capacitor list — it is not that the manuals were lost, it is that IBM never wrote one.

It is also '''not a standalone book'''. IBM issued it as a pamphlet to be filed in a binder alongside the general-purpose ''IBM Personal System/2 Hardware Maintenance Reference'' (part number 15F2190, form number S15F-2190-00) and ''Hardware Maintenance Service'' (part number 15F2200, form number S15F-2200-00), which carry the safety information, the general checkout procedure and the option and adapter sections. Those two general volumes are not hosted here.

* The supply is manually switched and must be set to the 100-125 V or 200-240 V range before the power cord is plugged in (3.1). Input is 90-137 V on the low range and 180-259 V on the high range (4.0).
* Minimum under-voltage sense levels (3.1): +4.5 V on +5 V, −4.3 V on −5 V, +10.8 V on +12 V and −10.2 V on −12 V. The Model 30 286 is an ISA machine with a −5 V output.
* The clock module is a plug-in FRU in a connector on the system board, removed after the cover and adapters. It is refitted with the white dot towards the rear, and IBM warns against bending its pins or prying it out (6.14).

The '''clock module''' is a separate FRU with its own removal procedure (6.14, "1070 Clock Module") on the Model 30 286. On a machine that will not hold the date, that is the part to change; it is not a soldered battery.
