The Commodore 4000 Series Technical Manual, Model 4016/4032 is Commodore's 76-page technical manual, part number P/N 990438. It is a package of engineering drawings (drawing trees, assembly drawings, parts lists, schematics, wiring diagrams and waveform sheets) with no narrative text. It belongs to the same numbered series as the C64 manual (990439) and the VIC-20 manual (990440).
The scan carries no text layer.
Machines covered
[edit | edit source]The cover names the 4016 and 4032. The drawings inside cover the universal dynamic PET board, drawing 8032090, "PCB ASSY - UNIV. DYNAMIC PET", seven sheets, and its dash numbers are:
| Part number | Description as printed |
|---|---|
| 8032090-01 | Univ. Dynamic PET 8032 – 60 Hz |
| 8032090-03 | Univ. Dynamic PET 4032 – 60 Hz (12") |
| 8032090-05 | Univ. Dynamic PET 4016 – 60 Hz |
| 8032090-07 | Univ. SuperPET 9000 – 60 Hz |
| 8032090-09 | Univ. SuperPET combo-board 9000 – 60 Hz |
| 8032090-11 | Univ. Dynamic PET 4032 – 9" – 60 Hz |
The same board, in different build configurations, serves the 8032, the 4032 in 9-inch and 12-inch cabinets, the 4016 and the SuperPET 9000, so the manual applies to all of them.
The revision block on that drawing runs from "Production Release" through revisions B to H, each tied to a Commodore ECO number (2157, 2172, 2237, 2308, 2414, 2565 and 2555, 2887, 3027).
Contents
[edit | edit source]- PDF pp. 3-7: parts list for drawing 8032090, including the regulators VR1 (7905), VR2 (7812) and VR4 (LM323), crystal Y1 (16 MHz), the CRT controller at UB13, the 6502 at UB14, the piezo transducer MT1 and the electrolytics C1, C2 (470 µF 16 V), C5 (4700 µF 25 V), C7, C11, C16, C17, C23 and C24.
- Power supply assembly 8032051, three sheets, with its parts list on PDF p. 39 (transformer, 23,000 µF filter capacitor, fuse 125 V slow-blow 1.6 A, fuse holder, rocker switch), a wiring diagram and Table I giving the transformer secondary tapping by cabinet: terminals 9 and 10 for 19 V to the 9-inch video, terminals 9 and 11 for 21 V to the 12-inch video. The drawing names the machines it is used on (8032, 8016).
- Assembly drawings and rework notes, including FCC-compliance jumper instructions and a part substitution index reference, P/N 321233.
- PDF pp. 42-51: PCB waveforms for the 12-inch CRT display, drawing 321450, ten sheets.
- PDF pp. 52-61: PCB waveforms for the 9-inch CRT display, drawing 321447, ten sheets.
What this manual settles
[edit | edit source]- The 9-inch and 12-inch PETs take different transformer taps, 19 V and 21 V, from the same supply assembly.
- The "4000 series" board is the universal dynamic board, also used in the 8032 and the SuperPET 9000.
- The logic board, not the supply chassis, carries all three regulators; the +5 V part is an LM323.
- The revision history ties each board change to a Commodore ECO number, which is how a board's vintage can be placed.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No coverage of the original PET 2001 static board, a different design; see Commodore PET 2001 Service Documentation.
- No troubleshooting guide, circuit theory or symptom tables.
- No text layer, so every value must be read from the drawings.
- 60 Hz machines only, by the dash-number descriptions.
