Macintosh Classic/ Classic II/Performa 200 Service Source

The Macintosh Classic/Classic II/Performa 200 volume of Apple's Service Source covers all three of those machines in one manual. The PDF was distilled on 22 January 1996.

What it settles

• Battery: replace below 3.0 V. Apple's Battery Verification procedure says to set the voltmeter to the 10 V DC scale, measure across the cell, and "if the battery voltage is below 3.0 volts, replace the battery". This is the figure for the Classic family; the SE and SE/30 threshold is 2.8 V and should not be transplanted here. The cell is lithium, and Apple's warning is explicit: handled or discarded improperly it can explode.
• Battery verification requires the logic board out. Apple's "before you begin" is remove the cover, discharge the CRT, remove the logic board. It is not a measurement you take with the machine assembled.
• Processors: Classic is a Motorola 68000 at 7.8336 MHz with 256-byte instruction and data caches; Classic II and Performa 200 are a 68030 at 16 MHz, also with 256-byte caches.
• Memory: Classic 1 MB expandable to 4 MB (120 ns or faster SIMMs); Classic II and Performa 200 2 MB expandable to 10 MB (120 ns or faster). ROM 512K; PRAM 256 bytes. The Classic's memory expansion is a 44-pin cache connector carrying 256K x 4-bit DRAMs and two further SIMM sockets.
• Electrical: line voltage 100-120 V AC, 47-63 Hz single phase. No 220-240 V figure is printed in this manual, so nothing in it should be applied to a 240 V analogue board.
• Physical: 13.2 in (33.6 cm) H x 9.7 in (24.6 cm) W x 11.2 in (28.5 cm) D; 16-17.1 lb (7.3-7.8 kg) without an internal hard drive.

What this manual does not contain

No parts list, no schematic and no component values - there is no analogue-board capacitor table in this document, and any such table elsewhere that cites this manual is not sourced from it. There is no voltage adjustment procedure: the Adjustments chapter covers light-meter setup, video and yoke only, so the "+5 V 4.85-5.15 V / +12 V 11.90-12.75 V" figures from the Macintosh 128K/512K and Plus manuals have no counterpart here and do not apply to the Classic family. The Fuse take-apart names the position but prints no rating. The Electrical specification covers the 100-120 V machine only.
