Macintosh Classic/ Classic II/Performa 200 Service Source
The Macintosh Classic/Classic II/Performa 200 Service Source is Apple's module-level service manual for the Macintosh Classic, the Macintosh Classic II and the Macintosh Performa 200. This copy has 115 pages and no printed part number. The PDF was created on 22 January 1996, but its Light Meter Setup topic gives "0398 for March 1998" as an example meter date stamp, so the text was revised later than that date suggests.[1]

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Battery: measure with the logic board out on the 10 V DC range, and replace the cell if it reads below 3.0 V (PDF pp. 81–84). The cell is lithium, Apple part 742-0011 (PDF p. 115), and Apple warns it can explode if handled or discarded improperly.[1]
- Processors: Classic, Motorola 68000 at 7.8336 MHz; Classic II and Performa 200, 68030 at 16 MHz with 256-byte instruction and data caches (PDF p. 5). The Classic entry repeats the Classic II's "32-bit internal data bus" and "256-byte instruction and data caches" lines; the Classic's 68000 has no cache and a 16-bit data path.[2]
- Memory (PDF p. 6): Classic 1 MB, expandable to 4 MB; Classic II and Performa 200 2 MB, expandable to 10 MB; 120 ns or faster SIMMs; ROM 512K; PRAM 256 bytes. The Classic's memory expansion board carries 1 MB soldered plus two SIMM sockets and a "SIMMs"/"No SIMMs" jumper (PDF pp. 68–74). 1 MB SIMMs with fewer than eight chips do not work in the Classic (PDF pp. 26–27).
- Electrical (PDF p. 11): 100–120 V AC, 47–63 Hz single phase, 100 W maximum. Only the 100–120 V machine is specified, although the exploded view lists 220 V power/sweep boards.
- Physical (PDF p. 12): 13.2 × 9.7 × 11.2 in (33.6 × 24.6 × 28.5 cm); 16–17.1 lb (7.3–7.8 kg) without an internal hard disk.
- Power/sweep board revisions (PDF pp. 39–40, 59–60): Rev. A and Rev. B boards are functionally equivalent but not interchangeable. A Rev. A board needs a Rev. A CRT yoke assembly; a Rev. B board a Rev. B yoke and a Rev. B cover. Rev. A has plastic sleeves round the yoke connector prongs, Rev. B exposed prongs.
- Video adjustment targets (PDF pp. 96–106): contrast (PL2) 40 foot-lamberts ± 3 on a full-brightness screen; brightness (PL4) 5 foot-lamberts ± 1 on a half-brightness screen; image 7 in (177.8 mm) wide (LL2) and 4.7 in (119.38 mm) high (PF1); machine on for at least 30 minutes first.
- Classic II upgrade kit (PDF pp. 75–79): Classic II logic board, Classic II cover, microphone and accessory kit; the original serial number is transferred to the new rear housing.

What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]No schematics and no component values: the exploded view lists modules, cables and screws, not capacitors. There is no power-supply voltage adjustment and no rail table; the Adjustments chapter covers light meter setup, video and yoke only, so the "+5 V 4.85–5.15 V / +12 V 11.90–12.75 V" figures from the Macintosh Plus manual have no counterpart here. The Fuse topic (PDF pp. 65–66) shows how to pull the fuse but gives no rating; the rating is printed on the power/sweep board itself. The Electrical specification covers the 100–120 V machine only.[1]
For the power/sweep board circuit, BOMARC's schematics of boards 820-0395-A and 820-0525-A are at the start of File:MacintoshClassic LogicBoard Schematic.pdf. File:Classic Analog Board Schematic.pdf is the SE/SE30 analogue board, not a Classic document.
