The Macintosh Performa 200 is a consumer-oriented compact Macintosh computer introduced by Apple Computer on September 14, 1992.[1] It is a rebranded version of the Macintosh Classic II, sold through consumer retail channels as part of Apple's Performa line. The two models are identical in hardware specifications, differing only in external branding and bundled software.
Relationship to Classic II
The Performa 200 shares the same logic board, case design, and specifications as the Macintosh Classic II. Both models use a 16 MHz Motorola 68030 processor with a 16-bit data path, which limits memory bandwidth compared to the SE/30's 32-bit bus despite using the same processor.[2]
The Performa branding indicated sale through consumer retail outlets with bundled software and simplified setup, while the Classic II was sold through Apple's traditional dealer network.
Architecture and Processor
The Performa 200 uses the Motorola 68030 processor running at 16 MHz. The processor supports 32-bit operations internally but connects to RAM via a 16-bit data bus, reducing memory throughput. The system bus operates at 16 MHz.
A proprietary internal expansion slot was designed for an optional FPU co-processor, though Apple never released one.
