Panasonic FZ-10 Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection
Community drawing of the FZ-10 power board ETXMM002A2B (120 V)

The Panasonic FZ-10 has electrolytic capacitors on two boards: a switch-mode power board, which differs by region, and the main board, which also carries the CD-ROM drive circuit.[1] The values below come from Panasonic's U.K. parts list, from Console5's lists read off production boards, and from community drawings of the three power boards.[2] The 3DO Development Repo lists failed capacitors as a common fault on all 3DO models.[3]

Before you start

[edit | edit source]
  • Warning: the power board works directly from the mains. Its primary reservoir charges to about 130 V on a 120 V board and about 310 V on a 230–240 V board, and the power switch does not disconnect the primary.[4][5] Unplug the console and let the reservoir discharge, then measure across it before touching the board.
  • Panasonic's service note is to fit the power board's cover over it while working on the main board.[1]
  • Read the power board number before ordering parts. The primary reservoir differs between regions and a 200 V part on a 230–240 V board will fail.

Power board

[edit | edit source]
Power board electrolytics by region
Ref (120 V and Japan) Ref (230–240 V) Capacitance Voltage
C003 – 150 µF 200 V
– C007 47 µF 400 V
– C009 33 µF 35 V
C101 C101 560 µF 25 V
C102 C102 1000 µF 25 V
C103 C103 470 µF 25 V

The 120 V board ETXMM002A2B and the Japanese board ETXMM002J2B use a 150 µF, 200 V reservoir, C003, on the rectified mains (about 130 V).[4][6][2] The 230–240 V board ETXMM002E2B uses a 47 µF, 400 V reservoir, C007, at about 310 V, and a 33 µF, 35 V capacitor, C009, on the control side; Panasonic's U.K. parts list and the community drawing agree on both.[1][5] On all three boards C101 (560 µF) filters the +9 V output, and C102 (1000 µF) and C103 (470 µF) sit either side of the choke L102 on the +5 V output.[4][5]

Low-profile parts

[edit | edit source]

Console5 notes that Panasonic used a few low capacitors (under 9 mm tall) on the FZ-10 main boards. Standard heights fit in most positions; C703 is the one Console5 marks as needing a short part.[2]

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the console, discharge and check the power board as above.
  2. Remove the top case, the traverse unit and the power board, then the main board, in the order on the Panasonic FZ-10 General Maintenance page.[1]
  3. Read the board numbers and choose the matching list.
  4. Note the polarity of each capacitor before removing it, and inspect the board under any that have leaked.
  5. Fit parts of the same capacitance, at least the same voltage rating, and no taller than the original where Console5 marks a short part.
  6. Refit the power board and check the outputs at CN101 before connecting the main board: +9 V on pins 1–3 and +5 V on pins 13–17, with ground on pins 4–12. The drawings give 9.1 V and 5.0 V measured on the 230–240 V board.[4][5]
