Panasonic FZ-10 General Maintenance

From RetroTechCollection
Panasonic FZ-10

The Panasonic FZ-10 comes apart in a fixed order: top case, traverse unit, power board, then main board. The order, the service notes and the part numbers below are from Panasonic's U.K. service manual, IMD9504003C2.[1]

Safety

[edit | edit source]
  • Warning: the power board runs from the mains, with its reservoir at about 130 V (120 V boards) or about 310 V (230–240 V boards). The power switch acts on the control side, so the primary is live whenever the lead is plugged in.[2][3] Unplug the console and let the board discharge.
  • Fit the power board cover while working on the main board, and keep clear of the metal parts of the power section.[1]
  • Replace the mains fuse only with the same type, 2 A, 250 V.[1]

Disassembly

[edit | edit source]

Before starting, remove any disc, switch off, unplug the mains lead and remove any optional units. Panasonic warns against interchanging screws between parts of the console.[1]

Top case

[edit | edit source]
  1. Turn the console upside down.
  2. Remove the seven screws A.
  3. Turn it back over and lift the top case off.

Traverse unit

[edit | edit source]
  1. Push the two pins B out from underneath.
  2. Remove the traverse cover.
  3. Raise the traverse unit and unplug its five connectors, including CN760 and CN762, then lift it out.

Power board

[edit | edit source]
  1. Remove the power board cover.
  2. Release the four hooks C and remove the AC inlet and the power switch.
  3. Remove the two screws D.
  4. Unplug CN101 and lift the power board out.

Main board

[edit | edit source]
  1. With the top case and traverse unit off, remove the LED guide panel.
  2. Remove the five screws E and the upper shield plate.
  3. Remove the FMV cover on the right side.
  4. Remove the two screws F.
  5. Unplug CN420 and lift the main board out.

The CD panel comes off after releasing its two hooks G and removing the lid's hop-up spring and oil damper. The part Panasonic calls the DC latch comes off after releasing two hooks H.[1]

Reassemble in the reverse order.[1]

Service notes

[edit | edit source]
  • To play a disc with the lid open, tape down the lid switch SW720.[1]
  • When measuring the waveforms Panasonic marks on its schematics, measure from the underside of the assembled unit.[1]
  • Panasonic's service tools for the FZ-10 were an extension flat cable for the power supply (DFWV95C0103), an FZ-10 checker with manual (DFWV95C0104) and its cable (DFWV95C0105), a traverse platform for working under the traverse (DFWV95C0106) and a set of extension cables (DFWV95C0107 to DFWV95C0111).[1]

Laser and drive

[edit | edit source]

The laser diode is sensitive to static. Wear an anti-static wrist strap, work on a conductive sheet, keep clothing away from the pickup and leave its shorting point bridged while it is out. Do not touch the lens or turn the laser power preset.[1] The 3DO Development Repo notes that a dirty lens can be cleaned but a fogged or scratched one needs a new pickup, and that setting the laser current needs an oscilloscope.[4] The laser is the Sanyo SF-92.5 in its short-wire version.[5] A printed replacement for a CD-ROM pin of the FZ-10 is published on Thingiverse, and a printed AV expansion door is published on Printables.[6][7]

Back-up cell

[edit | edit source]

Saved games are held in 32 KB of SRAM backed by a 3 V lithium cell, BT400, which the U.K. parts list gives as a CR2032.[1] Check it and the board around it for corrosion whenever the console is open; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.

Checks while the console is open

[edit | edit source]
  • Look for leaking or bulging electrolytics on both boards. Values for each board are on the Panasonic FZ-10 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
  • Check the joints on the video and audio sockets; cracked joints give a picture on some outputs only.[4]
  • Clean the expansion port contacts; a dirty port causes failures with an XPort optical drive emulator.[4]
  • With the power board refitted and the main board unplugged, check +9 V on CN101 pins 1–3 and +5 V on pins 13–17.[2][3]
