The Psion Series 5mx User Guide is Psion Computers PLC's user manual for the Psion Series 5mx: version 1.1, October 1999, part no. 6105-0053-01, in English.[1] The PDF has 217 pages; printed page numbers are eleven lower than PDF page numbers (printed p. 191 is PDF p. 202). Much of the text still calls the machine "Series 5", including the chapter and troubleshooting headings, while the cover, copyright page and specification say Series 5mx.[1]

It is a user manual, not a service document. For a repairer it gives the care and battery instructions, the reset procedures and Psion's specification.

What it settles

The specification (printed p. 191) is the source the wiki's 5mx and 5mx Pro pages use in place of the Wikipedia figures:[2]

  • 172 × 89 × 24 mm; 350 g with batteries
  • 32-bit ARM 710T core at 36.864 MHz
  • 10 MB ROM and 16 MB RAM for the Series 5mx
  • CompactFlash Type I Memory Disk slot
  • Two AA alkaline cells; CR2032 lithium backup cell; optional mains adapter 6 V DC ± 10 %, 1 A
  • 53-key keyboard
  • Operating temperature 0-40 °C
  • RS-232-compatible serial link at up to 115,200 baud; IrDA SIR infrared

The care chapter lists the backup cells Psion recommends (Duracell DL2032, or CR2032 cells from Hitachi Maxell, Panasonic, Sony, Ultralife or Varta) and Duracell Ultra AA cells, and warns never to remove the main and backup batteries together.[3] The troubleshooting chapter gives the soft reset (paper clip in the reset hole above the backup battery) and the hard reset (reset, then hold both Shift keys and press Esc), which erases the internal disk.[4]
