Apple Lisa 2/10
The Apple Lisa 2/10 is the Apple Lisa 2 with a 10 MB hard disk inside the case. It was announced in January 1984 at US$5,495, alongside the Lisa 2/5 and the Macintosh.[1] Apple renamed it the Macintosh XL in January 1985 "to make it clear that the Macintosh XL (using MacWorks) and the Macintosh are compatible", and Apple's service documents treat the two names as the same machine.[2]

Differences from the Lisa 2/5
Apple lists the Lisa 2/10 with its own power supply, motherboard and I/O board. The CPU, memory and video boards are shared with the other Lisas.[5]

The internal hard disk connects to an internal parallel port, so the Lisa 2/10 has no external parallel connector.[4] ProFiles, up to six, connect through optional parallel interface cards. Software boots from the internal hard disk, a ProFile or the micro disk drive.[2]
The Macintosh XL I/O board (620-X142-X) carries disk controller ROM 341-0281 rev. D at 2-A, has a resistor at R-47 and has no batteries; the Lisa 2/5 board has batteries and no R-47.[2] The Lisa 2/10 I/O board has no parameter-memory switch.[2] Apple's configuration table gives the Macintosh XL the "10 amp" power supply, rated at 1.8 A AC, against the Lisa 2's "8 Amp" supply rated at 1.2 A AC.[2]
Power supply
The 661-73172 supply is a DataPower design. Mac84 documents a Lisa 2/10 US 120 V supply as DataPower model 699-0189, rated 1.8 A, with a 3 A 250 V fuse.[6] A two-sheet schematic reverse-engineered from the DataPower boards is hosted at File:Apple Lisa DataPower Power Supply Schematic (reverse-engineered).pdf. Capacitor values are on Apple Lisa Capacitor Replacement Guide.
Apple's Level I procedures give no voltage adjustment for the supply, only video adjustments. In Apple's video repair table, "power supply trips (turns off and on)" lists brightness and contrast adjustment before replacing the supply; "a sizzling noise coming from Lisa" lists replacing the supply first.[2]
Boot ROM codes and the Macintosh XL
The boot ROM and I/O ROM codes appear in the upper right corner of the screen after the start-up icons are tested. Apple's correct values are H and 88 for an unmodified Macintosh XL, and 3A and 88 once the Screen Modification Kit is fitted. The Lisa 2 and 2/5 show H and A8, or 3A and A8 when modified.[2]
The Screen Modification Kit changes three ROM chips on the CPU board and adds a transformer between the CRT and the video board. It exists because Macintosh pixels are square and Lisa pixels are not, so Macintosh documents look slightly taller than their real size on an unmodified Lisa screen.[2] Apple's user manual for the kit, part number 030-1240-A, is hosted as Macintosh XL Screen Kit.
Software
The Lisa Office System must be installed on the internal hard disk; Apple told technicians to upgrade every installation to version 3.1. Applications other than LisaWrite and LisaProject 3.1 are serialised to one machine once installed. MacWorks can be installed on the internal hard disk alongside the Office System, and on the Macintosh XL MacWorks supports the internal hard disk only.[2]
Troubleshooting notes
- Codes 80-85 are Apple's "ProFile errors", sending the technician to the start-up message for the bad ProFile icon.[2]
- Code 57, "Disk controller": Apple's replacement order is I/O board, disk drive, disk drive cables, CPU board, motherboard.[2]
- The full error table is on Apple Lisa; symptom procedures are on Apple Lisa Troubleshooting.
The keyboard plugs into a 1/4-inch phone jack at the lower left of the front, the mouse into a 9-pin D-type jack at the back, and composite video is available from a coaxial jack, J10, at the rear of the motherboard.[3]
