The '''IBM Technical Directory''' for the Personal Computer and Personal System/2, '''June 1988''', is a 15-page IBM catalogue of the technical publications then available, with '''part numbers, form numbers and list prices'''.
The '''IBM Technical Directory''' of June 1988, subtitled "Books, Reference Materials, and Software Products for IBM Personal Computer Products and IBM Personal System/2 Products", is IBM's US mail-order catalogue of technical publications and developer software for the PC and PS/2. It lists each item with its part number, form number and US list price. The scan has 15 pages: the cover, 12 numbered pages and an order form.

It is short, and it is the single most efficient cross-check in this collection for a form number or a price.

Page numbers are the directory's own.

* '''Guide To Operations and Quick Reference manuals''' — basic operation, testing, relocation and option installation; a diagnostic diskette was included with each.
* p. 2: introduction. Since the previous issue the PS/2 Model 50, 60 and 80 technical references had been combined into the ''Personal System/2 Hardware Interface Technical Reference'', and the BIOS interface technical reference revised to cover all PS/2 systems.
* '''Hardware Maintenance Libraries''' — IBM explains the structure: each library "includes a service manual, a reference manual, and supplements", for trained service representatives. The Personal Computer library (which IBM notes covers the '''PS/2 Model 25 and Model 30''' as well as the PC, XT, AT and Portable) is listed at part number 6280087, form number 5229-9603.
* p. 3: Guide to Operations and Quick Reference manuals (PS/2 Models 25, 30, 50, 60, 70 and 80; PC, XT, AT, Portable, PC Convertible and PCjr), and the single-volume hardware maintenance manuals for the Color Printer, Graphics and Compact Printers, PCjr and PC Convertible.
* '''Hardware Technical Reference manuals''' for both lines, with editions marked.
* pp. 4-5: Hardware Maintenance Libraries, each a service manual and a reference manual with supplements. The PS/2 library (Models 50 and 60 base, 68X2222 and 68X2221) is for all PS/2 models except the 25 and 30. The Personal Computer library (Hardware Maintenance Service 6280087, S229-9603; Hardware Maintenance Reference 6280088, S229-9604) covers the PC, XT, AT and Portable and is listed as "including PS/2 Model 25 and Model 30", with the Model 25 and 30 service supplements 75X1054 and 68X2202.
* Notes on what has changed since the previous issue — in this issue, the arrival of the PS/2 Models 50, 55, 60, 70 and 80 material.
* pp. 6-9: Hardware Technical Reference manuals: system technical references, the Hardware Interface Technical Reference (68X2330), the second edition of the BIOS Interface Technical Reference (68X2341), and the Options and Adapters technical references by type.
* pp. 10-12: software reference manuals (BASIC 3.30, DOS Technical Reference 3.30, OS/2 Technical Reference 1.0), graphics toolkits, the 8514/A Adapter Interface developer's guide, and the IBM language compilers.
* Order form and ordering information (telephone 1-800-IBM-PCTB; mail order to Racine, Wisconsin).

A catalogue, not documentation. No technical content, no FRUs, no procedures. The prices are June 1988 list prices in US dollars.
It is a price list. There are no technical descriptions beyond a sentence or two per manual, no procedures and no FRU data. The prices are US list prices, valid for the United States, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Two things worth recording:
* The part and form numbers of the PC and PS/2 service libraries as sold in mid-1988, including which supplements belonged to which binder. The [[:File:IBM Hardware Maintenance Service 6280087 Parts Catalog (PC, XT, Portable PC).pdf|parts catalogue from HMS 6280087]] is hosted here.
* In this issue the PS/2 Model 25 and Model 30 service and reference supplements are sold as supplements to the Personal Computer library, not the PS/2 one (p. 5). IBM's October 1994 [[IBM Personal System 2 Hardware Maintenance Manual (S52G-9971-02, October 1994)|PS/2 hardware maintenance manual]] later covered both in its own ISA section.
* The Hardware Interface Technical Reference 68X2330 replaced the Model 50/60 Technical Reference 68X2224, the Model 80 Technical Reference 68X2256 and the Model 80-111/80-311 supplement 68X2285. The second-edition BIOS reference 68X2341 replaced 68X2260 and the Advanced BIOS supplement 68X2288 (p. 7).

* '''The PS/2 Models 25 and 30 were serviced under the Personal Computer hardware maintenance library, not the PS/2 one.''' IBM groups them with the PC, XT, AT and Portable. That is consistent with what the technical references show — the 8525 and 8530 are ISA machines with a −5 V rail, unlike the Micro Channel models — and it tells you which binder a service procedure for those two machines will be in.

* The structure of a hardware maintenance library: '''service manual + reference manual + supplements'''. That explains why so many of the pamphlets on this wiki say "use this with part number 15F2190 and 15F2200" — they are supplements, and were never meant to stand alone.

Page numbers are the directory's own.

  • p. 2: introduction. Since the previous issue the PS/2 Model 50, 60 and 80 technical references had been combined into the Personal System/2 Hardware Interface Technical Reference, and the BIOS interface technical reference revised to cover all PS/2 systems.

What this directory does not contain

[edit | edit source]

It is a price list. There are no technical descriptions beyond a sentence or two per manual, no procedures and no FRU data. The prices are US list prices, valid for the United States, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The part and form numbers of the PC and PS/2 service libraries as sold in mid-1988, including which supplements belonged to which binder. The parts catalogue from HMS 6280087 is hosted here.
  • In this issue the PS/2 Model 25 and Model 30 service and reference supplements are sold as supplements to the Personal Computer library, not the PS/2 one (p. 5). IBM's October 1994 PS/2 hardware maintenance manual later covered both in its own ISA section.
  • The Hardware Interface Technical Reference 68X2330 replaced the Model 50/60 Technical Reference 68X2224, the Model 80 Technical Reference 68X2256 and the Model 80-111/80-311 supplement 68X2285. The second-edition BIOS reference 68X2341 replaced 68X2260 and the Advanced BIOS supplement 68X2288 (p. 7).
