The IBM Personal System/2 Model 60 Technical Reference, First Edition (May 1988), is IBM's 56-page model-specific hardware and software interface reference for the PS/2 Model 60 (8560), the floor-standing 286 Micro Channel machine. It is the only technical reference IBM published for the Model 60 and the only edition — the 8560 was withdrawn before the October 1990 revision, so unlike the Models 50, 70 and 80 there is no later edition with a power supply chapter.

What it contains

  • Section 1, System Overview — model and submodel bytes, system board devices and features, the block diagram and I/O address map, performance specifications and physical specifications.
  • Section 2, Programmable Option Select — the POS address map and the system board and adapter setup registers.
  • Section 3, System Board — Micro Channel adapter identification and the central arbiter, the ROM and RAM subsystems, the system memory map and memory connectors, the RT/CMOS RAM address map and real-time clock bytes, system control ports A and B and the power-on password.

Physical specifications: 165 mm wide (318 mm with the feet extended), 483 mm deep, 597 mm high, 20 kg with one fixed disk drive, heat output 363.4 W.

What it does not contain

This is a programming and interface reference, not a service manual. There are no FRU part numbers, no removal and replacement procedures, no symptom-to-FRU index and no component values — IBM put those in the model's Hardware Maintenance Reference and Hardware Maintenance Service pamphlets. There are no schematics; the planar is described as a block diagram and a set of register and connector tables.

It is also not self-contained. IBM split the PS/2 Technical Reference library into volumes, and this one carries only the model-specific part. Anything common to the family — Micro Channel architecture, the serial and parallel port controllers, the instruction sets, the keyboard scan codes — is in the Hardware Interface Technical Reference volumes, and BIOS in the BIOS Interface Technical Reference.

The May 1988 editions in particular have no power supply section at all — IBM only added one to these books in the October 1990 revision. For rail voltages and protection limits on a May 1988 machine, use the October 1990 edition of the same technical reference, or the model's Hardware Maintenance Reference.

What it settles

The Model 60 shares its tower chassis and its 20 kg / 597 mm dimensions with the Model 80, and its planar layout with the Model 50 family. Because there is no later edition, the rail and protection figures used on IBM PS/2 Model 60 come from the Hardware Maintenance Manual, not from this book — if you are checking a Model 60 supply, cite IBM Personal System 2 Hardware Maintenance Manual (S52G-9971-02, October 1994) instead.
