Amstrad PPC 512 / PPC 640 Service Manual

From RetroTechCollection
Revision as of 08:40, 1 October 2026 by Josh (talk | contribs) (Rewrite from the manual: fix contents page numbers, add service notes, alignment, FD-5 section and parts list entries; CPU is a V30 per parts list; remove uncited inferences)

The PPC 512S / 512D, PPC 640S / 640D Personal Portable Computer Service Manual is Amstrad plc's service manual for the PPC 512 and PPC 640 portables. It has 31 numbered pages, including the cover, plus a back cover giving Amstrad's Brentwood address; no date or part number is printed. This scan has 42 PDF pages, because the wide drawings are split across two images each, and carries the Internet Archive's OCR text layer.

The same manual is also hosted as Amstrad PC and PPC Service Manual (Compendium), a 32-page scan with one image per printed page and no text layer.

What it settles

Specification (p. 2)

The PPC640 has an 8086 16-bit processor at 8 MHz, 640K of RAM and 64K of video memory, and a compartment for ten alkaline C cells giving up to 8 hours' use, with an AC mains adaptor. Its display adaptor is MDA- and CGA-compatible and drives either the internal 640 × 200 supertwist LCD or an external CGA monitor; the LCD tilts and has adjustable contrast, with grey-scale emulation. The PPC640 has an integral Hayes-compatible modem (V21, V23, V22 and V22bis, with auto-dial and auto-answer), a serial port, a parallel Centronics port, a 102-key keyboard, one or two 720K 3.5-inch drives, MS-DOS 3.3 and Mirror II communications software, a speaker with volume control, a battery-backed real-time clock, a socket for an 8087 and a socket for the PPC640 expansion box, which takes IBM-compatible expansion cards and a hard disk. Closed, it measures 450 × 230 × 100 mm excluding the handle and weighs 5.4 kg without batteries.

The PPC512 is the same machine with 512K of RAM and without the modem and Mirror II.

The specification says 8086, but the electrical parts list gives the processor, IC120, as a CXQ70116P-8 (part 177284), Sony's 8 MHz version of the NEC V30.[1]

Amstrad's service policy (p. 2)

The notes to service engineers say that much of the manual is for information only, because servicing normally means exchanging circuit boards:

  • Full diagnostics are not in the manual. The R.P.5-2 diagnostic tool, available from CPC, is needed for in-depth fault-finding, and an upgrade kit lets it diagnose the PPC fully.
  • The disc drive mechanism and its boards are not to be serviced; complete exchange mechanisms come from Amstrad. The same applies to a second drive.
  • The supertwist LCD is a complete unit and is exchanged, not repaired.
  • Complete circuit boards are available on exchange.

Alignment (p. 14)

Amstrad gives two adjustments for the computer. The real-time clock is trimmed with TC101, measuring at pin 21 of IC134, and only needs doing if the clock chip has been replaced. The +5 V supply is set to 5 V ±5% with VR501, measured at the junction of L501 and C514, with the machine running from the mains adaptor. The equipment list is a digital multimeter, an oscilloscope and the diagnostic disc or tool.

FD-5 drive (pp. 3-15)

The FD-5 section is headed "for information purposes only". It lists the tools (alignment diskettes JU-01AA-DD and 817-363CE, and a drive exerciser), soft-error recovery, a trouble analysis table for nine failure types, and adjustment and verification procedures for motor speed, head output, radial alignment, azimuth, index burst, the track 00 sensor, the limiter and asymmetry. It states that no preventive maintenance is needed under normal use. Page 11 shows the test points, and pages 14-15 the drive's control board and schematic.

Electrical parts list (pp. 29-31)

Selected entries:

  • IC120 processor CXQ70116P-8, 177284; IC134 real-time clock MC146818P, 171399; IC131 CRT controller UM6845/AMS40072, 170106
  • LCD101 super twist display, 177245
  • AD501 AC adaptor, 177323; cigarette lighter cable, 177324; modem extension cable, 177325
  • FDD201 floppy disc drive, 177247 (PPC512) and 177248 (PPC640)
  • Protection devices ICP501 (ICP-N10), ICP502 (ICP-N5), ICP503 (ICP-N50) and ICP504/505 (ICP-N20)
  • PCB502 fuse board, 177251; PCB901 modem board MC0053A, 177322

The cabinet parts list on p. 16 gives separate PPC512 and PPC640 part numbers for most case parts, and a separate bottom assembly for the single-drive (S) and twin-drive (D) versions.

What this manual does not contain

There is no fault-finding procedure for the computer itself: Amstrad's notes refer the engineer to the R.P.5-2 diagnostic tool. There is no service data for the LCD panel, which is an exchange part, and the PPC640 expansion box appears only as a socket in the specification.
