The Macintosh Performa 588 is an alternate name for the Macintosh Performa 588CD, the consumer variant of the Macintosh LC 580 sold exclusively in Europe and Asia.[1] All Performa 588 units shipped with a 2X CD-ROM drive; the "CD" suffix was sometimes omitted in marketing materials.
In Japan, the 588 shipped with KanjiTalk 7.5 for Japanese language support. The model shares its hardware platform with the Macintosh Performa 580CD but was marketed in different regions.
Hardware Overview
The Performa 588 shares its logic board with the Macintosh LC 580 and uses the same LC 630-derived architecture:

- RAM: 4 MB soldered on-board plus 4 MB SIMM (8 MB total), expandable to 52 MB
- Storage: 500 MB IDE hard drive, 2X CD-ROM

Internal video is 640×480 only. With the external video connector kit the machine will mirror to 640×480 on Apple's 12-inch, Color Plus 14-inch, Performa Plus and Multiple Scan 15/17/20 displays, and to 800×600 on the Multiple Scan 15/17/20 and SVGA monitors.[2]
