Macintosh LC 580/Performa 580CD Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Macintosh LC 580/Performa 580CD Service Source is Apple's 151-page service manual for the Macintosh LC 580 and the Performa 580CD. The file is Apple's own PDF (FrameMaker, Acrobat Distiller 2.1), produced on 4 November 1995, not a scan. Apple describes the machines as higher-performance versions of the Macintosh LC 575, with a 33 MHz 68LC040 logic board, 4 MB of soldered RAM and two 72-pin SIMM slots. The manual works at module level: specifications, symptom charts, take-apart, battery procedures, display adjustments and an exploded view with part numbers. Page numbers below are the PDF's.

The machines contain a CRT and a mains-powered analog board. Apple's procedures discharge the CRT before the analog board is touched, with the unit face down; see CRT Discharge Procedure.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Display: the LC 580 uses a 0.28 mm dot-pitch shadow-mask CRT with an 11.5-inch viewable image, not the Trinitron of the LC 520, 550 and 575 (p. 15).
  • Power: 120 W maximum for all line and load conditions, 90-264 V rms (p. 18).
  • First Checklist: raster distortion, jitter and faint lines can come from magnetised metal objects, other electronics or fluorescent lights; a misadjusted screen can mimic analog board or CRT failure; CRTs rarely fail (pp. 23-24).
  • MPEG card: sound distortion with the MPEG board installed is cured by a modified board with a jumper from U5 pin 2 to D1 pin 1 (p. 25).
  • CD-ROM: early LC 580s had the AppleCD 300i Plus and later ones the AppleCD 600i; backup CDs for one do not work in the other (300i: 691-0462-B or 691-3305-A; 600i: 691-0793-A). PC Exchange shows CR-8004x for a 300i and CR-8005x for a 600i. The internal CD-ROM was set to SCSI ID 3 at the factory (pp. 36-38).
  • Global Village modem: the TelePort control panel is corrupted if a Performa 580CD restarts with AppleTalk inactive or LocalTalk not selected; the fix is the GlobalFax 2.5.2P update or a clean copy of the control panel from the backup CD (pp. 43-44).
  • Rear housing: five Torx screws; lay the unit face down on a soft surface and open it with a case cracker (p. 62).
  • CRT discharge: unlike other monitors, the LC 580 must be face down when the CRT is discharged; never wear a wrist strap until it is discharged; pull the CRT/video board straight off the neck, cutting away any grey epoxy first (pp. 67-70).
  • Analog board: slides out on two plastic guides; reconnect the ribbon cable and power connector before sliding it fully home, and push the power cables into the EMI shielding. Do the cutoff adjustment after replacing it (pp. 70-74).
  • Logic board: comes out of the back on a handle after the I/O door is removed. Replace a board with one SIMM slot with 661-0158 and a board with two SIMM slots with 661-1114; check that the battery cable is connected on the new board (pp. 75-77).
  • Battery: on a connector and a hook-and-loop base; replace below 3.0 V on the 10 V DC range (pp. 109-112).
  • Adjustments: a short plastic hex tool, never metal; adjustments are made from the rear, so watch the screen in a mirror and do not reach round the machine (pp. 121, 128).
  • Exploded-view part numbers (p. 151): logic board 661-1114 (661-1115 international); analog board 661-0940; CRT 661-0945 (northern hemisphere), 661-0947 (equatorial/polar); hard disk 661-0068 (350 MB), 661-0146 (500 MB); CD-ROM drive 661-0913 (600i); floppy drive 661-0121; fan 922-1803; rear housing 922-1615; front bezel 922-1474; control board 922-1459; speakers 922-1472; chassis assembly 922-1460.
