The Macintosh Performa 588CD is a Performa version of the Macintosh LC 580 that Apple did not sell in the United States. Apple's specification sheet gives an introduction date of 13 April 1995 and Japanese system software (KanjiTalk 7.5) as shipped.[1] Apple Japan sold it as the Performa 588, with 8 MB of RAM, a 500 MB IDE hard disk, a double-speed tray-loading CD-ROM drive, a 14-inch shadow-mask screen showing 32,768 colours at 640 × 480, and an Apple Keyboard II with JIS layout; there was no fax modem, and video input was an option.[2] EveryMac records it as sold in Europe and Asia, with Japanese order number M4059J/A, until 1 May 1996.[3]
The hardware is the same as the Macintosh Performa 580CD's, and Apple's Macintosh LC 580/Performa 580CD Service Source is the service manual for it.[1][4] The case looks the same as the Performa 575-578's, but the logic board is new, with an IDE hard disk interface and video input and output expansion, and the screen is a shadow-mask tube in place of a Trinitron.[3]

Battery
[edit | edit source]Apple's specification sheet lists a 4.5 V alkaline battery; the Service Source's specification page says "long-life lithium battery" without naming a part.[1][4] Apple's test is to measure the battery on the 10 V DC range with the logic board out and replace it below 3.0 V.[4] Check the pack's markings before buying a replacement. Alkaline leakage is neutralised with a weak acid such as vinegar, lithium leakage with bicarbonate of soda; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Maintenance and repair
[edit | edit source]Service the Performa 588CD as an LC 580: the Macintosh LC 580 page covers the logic board capacitors, analog board and CRT, take-apart, display adjustments and Apple's symptom charts.
