The Macintosh Performa 580CD is the Performa version of the Macintosh LC 580, an all-in-one Macintosh with a 33 MHz 68LC040 and a built-in 14-inch colour screen. Apple introduced it on 1 May 1995.[1] Apple's service manual covers it together with the LC 580 and says the Performa 580CD is bundled with a 500 MB IDE hard drive and a tray-loading double-speed CD-ROM drive; otherwise the manual applies to both machines.[2] EveryMac records it as sold in Canada, Asia and Australia until 1 February 1996, at US$1,500, and also lists 5 MB and 250 MB configurations.[3]

Apple describes the LC 580 and Performa 580CD as higher-performance versions of the Macintosh LC 575.[2] The case looks the same as the Performa 575-578's, but the logic board is new, with an IDE hard disk interface and video input and output expansion, and the screen is a shadow-mask tube in place of a Trinitron.[3]

Battery

[edit | edit source]

Apple's specification sheet lists the battery as a 4.5 V alkaline type, while the Service Source's specification page says only "long-life lithium battery" and names no part.[1][2] Apple's test: remove the I/O door and logic board, disconnect the battery, measure it on the 10 V DC range and replace it below 3.0 V.[2] Check the markings on the pack before buying a replacement. Neutralise alkaline leakage with a weak acid such as vinegar, and lithium leakage with bicarbonate of soda; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.

Maintenance and repair

[edit | edit source]

The Performa 580CD is serviced as an LC 580. The Macintosh LC 580 page covers the logic board and its capacitors, the analog board and CRT, Apple's take-apart and display adjustments, and Apple's symptom charts, including a Performa 580CD modem fault ("current port is busy") cured with the GlobalFax 2.5.2P update. The analog board and CRT carry high voltage and hold a charge after the machine is unplugged; see CRT Discharge Procedure.
