The Macintosh Performa 630 is a consumer-oriented personal computer manufactured by Apple Computer and released on July 18, 1994.[1] It is a rebrand of the Macintosh LC 630 for the consumer retail market, featuring a 68LC040 processor without a floating-point unit.
The Performa 630 was the base model in the 630 series, shipped without a CD-ROM drive. It was bundled with a 14-inch Apple Performa Display Plus, keyboard, mouse, and consumer-oriented software including ClarisWorks, At Ease, and Quicken.[2]
Model Variants
The Performa 630 was part of a large family of consumer models based on the Macintosh LC 630:
- Performa 630CD – Added 2× CD-ROM drive
- Performa 631CD – 8 MB RAM, 500 MB HD, bundled with modem and display
- Performa 635CD – 5 MB RAM, CD-ROM, modem, and display bundle
- Performa 636 – Higher-education market variant

Architecture and Processor
The Performa 630 uses a Motorola 68LC040 processor running at 33 MHz. Unlike the Quadra 630 which uses a full 68040, the LC and Performa variants lack the integrated floating-point unit (FPU). The processor can be replaced with a full 68040 to add FPU functionality.
The system bus operates at 33 MHz. The 630 includes 1 MB of ROM.
Memory and Storage
RAM Configuration
The Performa 630 ships with 4 MB of RAM soldered to the logic board. A single 72-pin SIMM socket allows expansion up to 36 MB total (4 MB onboard + 32 MB SIMM). 80 ns non-parity SIMMs are required.[3]
Storage Systems
The Performa 630 was the first desktop Macintosh to use an IDE hard drive interface rather than SCSI, reducing manufacturing costs. The system includes a 250 MB IDE hard drive and a 1.44 MB SuperDrive floppy.
An external SCSI port remains available for peripherals.
Display and Graphics
The system includes 1 MB of dedicated DRAM for video (non-upgradeable). Supported resolutions:
- 512×384, 640×480: 16-bit color (thousands of colors)
- 800×600, 832×624: 8-bit color (256 colors)
An LC PDS video card can be added for higher resolutions or a second display.
