Macintosh Performa 6200CD

The Macintosh Performa 6200CD is a PowerPC-based desktop computer introduced by Apple Computer on July 11, 1995.[1] It was the consumer-oriented replacement for the Quadra 630, sharing the same desktop case design. The business version, sold only in Asia, was marketed as the Power Macintosh 6200/75.[2]

Architecture and Processor

edit

The Performa 6200CD uses a PowerPC 603 processor running at 75 MHz with integrated FPU. The processor is a 32-bit design with a 64-bit data path.[3]

The internal bus architecture consists of three buses:

  • A 64-bit 75 MHz bus connecting the CPU, 256 KB L2 cache, and 4 MB ROM
  • A 32-bit 37.5 MHz bus connecting memory, video, and I/O controllers via the Capella bridge chip
  • A 32-bit 16 MHz I/O bus managed by the PrimeTime II controller

The 6260CD and 6290CD variants use a PowerPC 603e processor at 100 MHz, with the system bus speed increased to 40 MHz.

Memory and Storage

edit

RAM Configuration

edit

The 6200CD shipped with 8 MB of RAM in two 72-pin SIMM slots, expandable to 64 MB using 80ns or faster SIMMs. The system dedicates 1 MB of main RAM to video memory, leaving 7 MB available for applications in the base configuration.

Storage Systems

edit

Standard storage includes a 1.0 GB IDE hard drive, a 4X CD-ROM drive, and a 1.44 MB 3.5" floppy drive with manual insert mechanism. The system does not support internal SCSI hard drives.

Display and Graphics

edit

Video is handled by an integrated controller using 1 MB of system RAM as VRAM. Display resolutions supported:

  • 640×480 at 16-bit color
  • 800×600 at 8-bit color
  • 832×624 at 8-bit color

A second display can be added via an LC PDS video card.

Input/Output and Expansion

edit

Port Configuration

edit
  • 2× RS-232/422 serial ports (printer and modem)
  • 1× External SCSI port (DB-25)
  • 1× ADB port
  • 1× Monophonic sound input
  • 1× Stereo headphone output
  • 1× DB-15 video output

The modem port was originally covered by a plastic seal on units shipped with an internal modem. If the seal is removed and the internal modem extracted, the external port becomes usable.

Expansion Slots

edit
  • 1× LC PDS slot
  • 1× Comm slot (112-pin, for internal modem)
  • 1× Video I/O slot
  • 1× TV tuner slot
