This is the original Inside Macintosh: Apple's definitive programmer's reference for the 128K, 512K and Plus-era Macintosh Toolbox and Operating System, and the single most important Macintosh software document of the 1980s.
What it covers
[edit | edit source]Volumes I and II document the User Interface Toolbox and the Operating System manager by manager: QuickDraw, the Resource Manager, the Event Manager, the Window, Control, Menu, TextEdit and Dialog Managers, the Memory Manager, the File Manager, the Device Manager, the Printing Manager, the Sound Driver, the Serial Drivers and the rest. Volume III is A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Macintosh, the hardware-adjacent overview volume, together with summaries and indexes.
What this document does not contain
[edit | edit source]It is a programming reference, and it is not a repair source. It contains no service procedures, no exploded views, no parts list, no schematic, no rail voltages, no capacitor values and no symptom charts. Volume III describes the machine's architecture from the programmer's side - memory maps, the VIA and IWM as seen from software - but it is not a service document, and a figure taken from it is a software-visible address or register, not a measurement to be made with a meter.

Where Apple's developer documentation does carry electrical data it is in the Developer Notes rather than in Inside Macintosh - those give rail currents, processor-direct-slot power budgets and connector pinouts.
