The Amstrad DMP2000 is a 9-pin impact dot-matrix printer that Amstrad sold from 1985. It prints at up to 105 characters per second, takes cut sheets, rolls or fan-fold paper, and connects through a Centronics-compatible parallel port. Amstrad's user instructions were first published in 1985, with a second edition in autumn 1985.[1] Amstrad's combined service manual gives one mechanism parts list and one electrical parts list for the DMP2000 and the Amstrad DMP3000, with separate cabinet parts.[2]

The combined service manual gives the DMP2000's size as 380 × 100 × 260 mm; the standalone DMP2000 service manual gives 400 × 250 × 100 mm and 4.2 kg, the same as the DMP3000.[2][3]

Controls

[edit | edit source]

The front panel has ON LINE, FF (form feed) and LF (line feed) buttons with POWER, PAPER OUT and ON LINE lamps. The mains switch is on the right-hand side. There is also a manual paper-feed knob, a FRICTION/TRACTOR switch and a paper-thickness knob, which is moved down for darker printing and up for thicker paper. Holding LF while switching on starts the self test, which prints the character set until the paper runs out or the printer is switched off. Holding LF and ON LINE while switching on selects the NLQ-standard typeface.[1]

Two banks of DIP switches at the rear (DS1, eight ways; DS2, ten ways) set the international character set, carriage return behaviour, paper-out sensing, page length, 7- or 8-bit codes, default typeface, slashed zero, perforation skip, buffer mode and the bleeper. DS2-9 and DS2-10 are not used. Amstrad's instruction is to switch the printer off before changing them, and to set DS1-7 on for an Apple computer.[2]

Electronics

[edit | edit source]

The printer is controlled by a NEC µPD7811G-071 (IC6) with its program in an EPROM at IC8 and a static RAM buffer at IC10. On the DMP2000 the ROM is a 27128 (the parts list gives an HN4827128G-25) and the RAM a 6116 or 8128 (MB8128-15); the DMP3000 uses a 27256 and a 6264. Either model can instead take two smaller EPROMs (2764s, or a 2764 and a 27128), and jumpers J1, J2, J3 and J5 select the arrangement; J4 is set one way for an Amstrad computer and the other way for other computers.[2] The 5 V supply comes from an L7805CY regulator (IC18). The mains side has a filter coil (LF1) and two 250 V polystyrene capacitor pairs, C31/C34 and C32/C33, marked as safety items, and the transformer feeds two bridge rectifiers, an S4VB10 (BD1) and an S2VB10 (BD2).[2]

Pin 18 of the interface socket supplies +5 V at up to 50 mA.[2]

Repair

[edit | edit source]

The Amstrad DMP2000 Maintenance Guide covers the ribbon, the print head, the self test, the power supply and its capacitors. Amstrad's service manuals give parts lists, a block diagram and the circuit diagram, but no fault-finding table or adjustment procedure.[2]
