Apple Lisa Level 1 Technical Procedures Mar85

The Lisa Level I Technical Procedures, Apple part number 072-0085, 415 pages. This copy is the March 1985 state of the manual. Like all Apple loose-leaf service manuals of the period, each section carries its own revision date rather than the manual having a single one.

This is the primary Apple service document for the Lisa, and it is a full technical-procedures manual, not a module-exchange guide: it includes CRT discharge, video adjustments, diagnostics and troubleshooting.

Two items stand out:

  • Transferring the Video State Machine ROM when replacing a CPU board. This is a self-inflicted fault waiting to happen: fit a replacement CPU board without moving that ROM across and the machine will not produce a correct display, and the board will be blamed.
  • Checking the battery switch during set-up. The Lisa's batteries are switchable, and a machine that loses its clock may simply have the switch off.

What this manual does not contain

No circuit schematic and no component values. It is a procedures manual: the parts it names are assemblies and boards. It does not cover the Lisa's software beyond installing and testing the Office System.

Apple Service Technical Procedures Lisa/Macintosh XL is the same manual, 072-0085, at a different state: its volume table of contents is dated June 1986 and it adds the Lisa 2/10 upgrade and the Macintosh XL Screen Kit sections. Between the two, check both before concluding a procedure is absent.
