The Psion Series 3a Service Manual is Psion PLC's service manual for the Psion Series 3a: version 1.0, June 1996, Psion part no. 6103-0114-01, in English. The PDF has 34 pages; the manual's own page numbers start at 1 on the Introduction (PDF p. 7), so printed page numbers are six lower than PDF page numbers. The contents page lists some later sections one or two pages earlier than they appear.[1] Its introduction says it is written for service technicians at third-party or registered Psion service centres.[1]

What it settles

  • The current limits used on the wiki's Series 3 and 3a troubleshooting pages: the table on printed p. 19 gives maximum (and typical) standby and on-and-idle currents for the Series 3 and for 256K/512K, 1 MB and 2 MB Series 3a machines.[2]
  • Two LCD versions were fitted, Seiko with positive polarity and Hitachi with negative polarity, and few non-English machines have the Seiko module.[3]
  • Psion recommends replacing the battery wires whenever a machine is taken apart, because they flex every time the case is opened and closed, and gives the routing of the wire through the battery moulding.[4]
  • TAB LCD hinge springs are coloured blue and non-TAB springs black.[5]

What it does not contain

  • No circuit schematic; the circuit description stops at a block diagram
  • No component values, component placement drawing or capacitor list
  • No coverage of the Psion Series 3c or Psion Series 3mx, which followed it; the wiki's 3c and 3mx pages use it only for the shared mechanical procedures
