What it covers

[edit | edit source]

The specification on page 2 compares the two models side by side: an 80286 or 80386SX at 16 MHz switchable to 8 MHz; 1 wait state on the ALT286 and 0.6 on the ALT386SX, or none with 60 ns DRAM; 1 MB of RAM with 2 MB and 4 MB upgrades; one half-length 16-bit slot; a 20 MB (28 ms) or 40 MB (25 ms) voice-coil hard disk; a 1.44 MB 3.5-inch floppy drive; VGA, EGA, CGA, MDA and Hercules graphics on a backlit 640 × 480 LCD of 223 × 169 mm with 32 grey scales; an internal 110/220/240 V self-switching power supply; a removable NiCd battery pack giving two hours, with a two-hour quick charge; 318 × 380 × 95 mm; and 7.00 kg with the battery, 6.00 kg without. The same page gives the safety tests: a 1.5 kV RMS flash test for 3 seconds, an insulation test at the same voltage requiring more than 4 MΩ, and a mains-lead earth resistance of no more than 0.5 Ω.

The electrical parts list on page 10 gives the PCBs, ICs (including the VLSI VL82C-series chip set, the Cirrus Logic CL-GD610 and CL-GD620 VGA controllers, the MC146818AF real-time clock and the BIOS EPROMs), switches, diodes, transistors, coils, crystals and miscellaneous parts; page 11 lists the parts that differ on the ALT386SX. The cabinet parts list on page 12 gives the mechanical parts and the replaceable units: the NiCd battery pack, keyboard unit, LCD unit, hard disk, floppy disk unit, power supply unit and fan motor.
